Pre-viz done in max. There's going to be a hole in the middle of the street. The book is very long, and I was admittedly skimming through it over the weekend looking for good descriptions. The death really caught my eye, since I think it would be a good opportunity to showcase what could happen to our planet if such a nuclear war did take place. Expect more updates over the course of the week as I'm on vacation and as such will have oodles of time to work.

Rough concept of color and light. Also will help me guide the rubble-izing of the scene.

I like your concept. Looks like a pretty ambitious project, but if you didn't think you can do it in time...then I'm sure you wouldn't have chosen this as an entry. :D

Good luck and I hope to see this one finished.

Yeah, I've got about a third of the rough modeling done at the moment. It's going to be alot of work to get it finished, but I've also got several free days coming up on the schedule so we'll see how far I am in another few weeks. Thanks for the comments :)

I'm uploading lighting tests just to hopefully get some opinions. I think both have their strengths and weaknesses, so the final lighting scheme will probably come down to a combination of the two. Anyway, here's color 1.

Thanks man. I've been on vacation in New York for the past few days and have really missed working on this. Nice to be back in the hot seat. Expect more updates by the middle of next week.

Wow, nice. I like the use of the light comming out of the ground. From what I read of the book so far though there is no night or day but rather a continous somewhat bright light directly overhead.

Thanks for the comments. I looked at a good deal of reference when I was working out the lighting. I ended up trying to emulate the look after a volcanoe, where the sky is mostly covered in clouds so the lighting is real soft and spread out. There's a painted projector map on the main sun light that I think will show up better as the scene gains some detail.

I really like the second of the 2 color tests. The red accents really provide a nice atmosphere. Good luck with it!

Just some max screengrabs of the modeling process. I'm texturing everything as I go, and the lighting has been set up from pretty much day one, so I'm not really following the milestone layout as well as I guess I should be. Anyway, lots more to do so back to work!

Second update for the day. I rendered this last night before bed, pretty happy with the results. There's still alot of tweaking that needs to be done but I think it's getting there. CnC are totally welcome.
-edit:-
Sky isn't final, and the redist lights are still coming out too pink (might just fix it in combustion though). Anyway, just thought I'd let everyone know :)

Thanks man. It's definitely getting to be crunch time but I'm felling pretty decent about getting it all done. Thanks for the well-wishing :)

Thanks for the support :) It's definitely crunch time this weekend. I'll hopefully be done by Sunday or Monday night, leaving me the rest of the week to render (which it will definitely take). Anyway, good luck to you as well.

Thanks for the well-wishes :) I made some really good progress today, so if I can match that tomorrow I should be near finished with the modeling and texturing. I need to do a bit more painting on the clouds for the background, but after that it's just rendering and compositing. My main worry right now is that I won't have enough time to get it all rendered! Anyway, best of luck to you as well :)

Hey everyone! Sorry it's been so long since my last update, the internet has been down here and I haven't had a chance to post. I'm working on lighting today, as I have become unhappy with the previous lighting setup. the modeling and texturing are 95% done, with a just a couple loose ends to fill before I start final rendering.

Here's my lit and textured model. Sorry it's been ages since my last update, but we had a pretty bad ice storm here and the internet (and power for a while) has been down. Anyway, I'll be updating a few more times today since everything is back up now. I'm wrapping up the post work in Combustion today, and will probably update the final render tomorrow, with the video maybe a day after that. Enjoy!

Here's my final ambient occlusion pass. I didn't you use any global illumination on this piece, mainly because my computer could already barely render the file, so the AO and some sneaky lighting will have to suffice. This element was rendered out in 6 passes. The lit and textured element was rendered out in 32 passes: diffuse, shadow, spec, and reflection for each of the 8 sections of the model.

Here's the final model. One of many submissions I'm doing tonight from a bank because the internet at our house is down. There's not any displacement in this render, so it's missing a bit of the detail shown in the final.

The final shading and lighting. It looks a bit over-exposed because it was rendered in a dynamic range format (OpenEXR) and then clamped down. Using a 32 bit format gives you a lot more freedom when doing post effects and compositing.

Here are some of the various layers used to create the final composite. I exaggerated a few in order to make them more visible. The passes in order: Ambient occlusion, diffuse with lighting, specular, reflection, modified depth, particles, shadows, and volume fog.

Software: 3ds max,combustion

I chose to do a lighting change as opposed to a camera move because the render time on a camera move would have been horrendous (the passes for the final image took over 3 days to render). The video transitions between two different composites of the same footage, and also helps to illustrate just how much one can change in post.

Video should work now.

The events in Eon really made me consider what Earth would be like if a devastating war like The Death ever took place. I tried to capture that post-apocalyptic feel with my 3d scene. Working on this contest has been very fun. It's nice to see so many talented people taking the time to participate.
