Hi guys.

I am trying to use Photoshop to create my own textures for a house I have modelled in Lightwave. I want to create dirty and grungy textures to give my house a dirty abandoned look.

Here is my question. What scale should I create these textures in Photoshop. Pixel values would be a big help. I know it may relate to the size of the model but surely there is a standard size for the creation of textures that can be applied within most 3D packages.

Please give me some advice as it would help a lot.

I would also ask this around in some of the 3D app forums, Lightwave maybe.

Well, not even getting into different texture algorithn types or final render requirements, I would say to start with something like 512x512 pixels and see how it looks. Most current systems can EASILY handle 512 or 1024 sqaured textures without a problem. Start from within that range and go from there.

What I would so is actually create the texture in a pretty high resolution and to keep it as a master file, and then downsample a copy for your texture. That way you can get a bigger one of you think you need it.

Hope that helps for starters.

I wrote an article about this, you can download it here:
