View Full Version : Vray: Flashbulb-type effect (seeking help)

I've been trying for a couple of days to recreate a sort of flashbulb effect, in vray 1.5 (Max 9).

I'm starting to get close, using a spotlight with Vray shadows, and attenuation falloff... but it's still not quite what I'm looking for.

Has anyone here had success with this kind of lighting, and if so, can you point me in the right direction with any helpful tips?

Thanks!

Can you post a picture of what you've got right now? What are you having problems with.

Sure. I've tried many, many different variations... so the example below isn't so much "what I'm having problems with", as it is merely a sample of the scene I'm trying to light. As to specific problems which I'm having, it's basically just a matter of finding the right balance between the light's brightness and attenuation falloff, and the camera's exposure settings (shutter speed, aperature, film speed, etc

What most people do for this is not bother with the attenuation at all - it's helpful for scanline lighting but in this case you should use inverse square decay instead. for this particular situation, most people model a little housing for the flash bulb which is just a box missing one side for the light to come out of and a small spherical vray light inside. You just turn on GI and turn the light up until you have enough light filling the room. If the light is at the same position as the camera the shadows will be hidden directly behind everything so move it to the right or left of your camera.

Thank you!

I'm rendering out some tests using the method you described even as I type. I'll post the results if I have any luck.

Thanks again!
