Go to this link:
http://www.eragonmovie.com/main.html?cid=us

and click on the "spine" button in the upper left...it changes to "forest" (takes a sec to load) then you'll see this lovely animated waterfall. How was this done? Is anything like this possible in Vue?

We have forests, water, trees, clouds....but is an animated waterfall possible?

This is possible in Vue. Look closely at the website and you will see that the illusion of the waterfall is created by an animation of 'water' being played inside a picture of a waterfall with a cutout in it for the animation to show through. The outer edges of the waterfall never move.

In Vue create a plane with the image of a waterfall made in Photoshop or similar application applied to it. Create a large sphere with a surface to simulate water/white clouds and have it poke through the plane from behind the section where you want the 'water' to be animated. Rotate the sphere on the x axis and the 'water' will flow.

If you want a very realistic waterfall, create the environment in Vue and then composite the water particles with something like ParticleIllusion (www.wondertouch.com (http://www.wondertouch.com)). That's how I'd do it. (see the top-right example of the page 3 tab on the Wondertouch site)

Gee man, thanks for the great tips! The Wondertouch solution looks quite good but I wonder if it can do long streams of falling water as well as the gurgling? Many AE plugins I've used tend to be one-trick ponies so I hope this might prove to be more versatile. If anyone has an example of such a working ParticleIllusion waterfall I'd love to see it. Are there any other flowing water plugins for AE?

Realflow (http://www.nextlimit.com/realflow/) also looked very promising (for use inside LW or other 3D host) until I hit the BUY button and got a bad case of sticker shock ($2,700).

Gregory, go to www.lostpencil.com and select free/download at the top of the page. Then select 'The Outpost' to see what I mean.

Hope that helps.

Cheers,

Graham, thanks for the great link example.

Unfortunately I can't see the QT movie on my Mac (neither Safari nor Firefox know what to do  - any tips on how to see the movie?). But certainly get the idea and I agree, that looks like the optimal solution. Excellent indeed. It could only be better if it were inside of Vue (but then previewing and tweaking would take more time so post FX is probably best solution).

Thanks for the great suggestion. Now to find money for ParticleIllusion....

(obviously Greg just discovered how to add emoticons too....)

Particle Illusion has sooo many presets and you can adjust them so that they can basically do anything. We used it for an animation of a fountain in the middle of a pond and it looked great. We didn't go the whole nine yards with water bubbling at the base since it was a relatively quick section, but it worked very well and took ALOT less time than if we were to use RealFlow. For the sort of look you're after, this would great solution.

And no... I don't work for Wondertouch. :)

Thanks Magalodon. I appreciate the additional insight.

Hi synergy543,

Since the waterfall effect is a motion on 2D it can be achieved with Wondertouch's Particle Illusion currently ver.3 . It's very easy to use tool and capable of exproting aplha video.

I am working on a project that requires a waterfall to be done. While searching for tutorials I came across this tutorial using Vue to make a decent waterfall. Here is the link.

Have fun exploring!

 when u plan what u gonna do , check what's suitable to be made in 3d and what can save you in post production ( ie after effects, combustion, etc) and/or with progs like particle ilusion it will save time in render and will look good too

Hi,

I think the waterfall on the website is made with photoshop and animated with flash.
Since flash8 has included the blur filter you can make things like smoke (water haze).
The animation is a still moving picture, I guess.
