View Full Version : Realistic Metal (Mix8?) (paint and chipped paint) in Mental Ray for Maya

I'm trying to find a way to do this as realistically as possible in Maya. I want my robot to be painted and the edges to be chipped, and worn to reveal a brushed steel type look. And in some places simply chipped...

I have a very detailed robot so I would like to do this somewhat procedurally. I want to be able to simply paint a black and white map to reveal the underlying brushed steel surface.

There doesn't seem to be a layered shader in maya so can I use the Mix8? How would I go about doing this? What would I plug my black and white map into?

Hoping someone who has experience with this could help me out, thanks...

There is a layered shader in Maya. It's called Layered Shader. It's in the Create Maya Nodes section of the Hypershade. It's a Maya shader, not a Mental Ray shader but you can use it in mental ray renders.

sinistar,

This link (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=373024) may get you interested in.

And I am wondering if you try "Layered Texture" over the "Layred Shader." IMHO, LT got simlar control but render time cost much less than LS...

Thanks, I do like that metal texture tutorial.

I have considered layered texture but I don't think it is right for me as I would like to have a different shader. for the scruffed metal and the Painted metal.

I know about the layered shader/texture in Maya but i've been told they don't work well with Mental Ray. So i've been figuring out the Mix8 shader for mental ray.

Right now my main problem is getting a scruffed metal looking shader/texture in mental ray. The textre maps ussually either come out too strong or the shader itself is just too perfect....
