View Full Version : Better Modelling for Character Rigging?

Hi all,

I am trying to rig up a veeeerrry simple character to get used to character design, rigging and animation. After setting the bones and C.Bonnet maps on the legs I notice ugly creasing at the thigh/pelvis joint. :annoyed:

After reading some tutorials I know that creasing is caused by poor mapping and bad poly cages at the joint areas, so was wandering if anybody fancied getting their crayons out and showing me were to use my trusty Knife tool to get better joint areas. :)

Thanks in advance for any help guys.

PS. I know the model sucks, but its a base model for a range of characters I want to build with this basic body shape.

i think, you'll have to work on the crouch (spelling?) of your character. this could cause problems in the animation..

it would help if you'd post a wireframe of your char, but maybe the attached image gives you an idea...

[edit] oh, and i think, unless you're creating a gorilla, the arms are a bit too long... ;)

Hey CosmicBear,

Thanks for taking the time to help me out, I will give your suggestions a try later today.

About the arms, yeah....I know they are a little on the long side! :)

Will post up the results along with a wire later.

Thanks again,

While it's hard to say without seeing a wireframe, I think the deformation problem is more related to bone position and weighting than it is to mesh topology.

Hi AdamT & CosmicBear,

Here is the wireframe of the model which looks and bends like crap!!!

I am trying the advice from CosmicBear tonight to see if it helps.

Sorry to be a pain with all these posts, but my aim is to try and understand how to build, weight and bone models to animate and pose well.

Thanks guys......
