Eon (Illustration) Entry: Justin Kellis

Wow, 2 months to go! I've been aware of this challenge from the first week, read the entire book, was all set to start early, then got distracted. Still... 2 months is a decent amount of time to get a good illustration done. I''m looking forward to working on this project and watching all you guys take your concepts to completion!

Finally got my scanner back up and working so I can post a little bit of progress. So far just sketches, I'm haven't decided on a scene or composition. I've been moving back and forth between a large epic scene showing the stone, the earth or the inside of chamber 7... and a more focused composition based on the characters. still up in the air. Here are a few sketches though that I've been working on.

After going over all my sketches I decided on this as the final concept. It shows a number of elements from different parts of the story, the V-STOL, the Stone, A Frant, Shuttles escaping the Death etc. Plus it keeps the focus on Patricia and makes the illustration very figurative based, which I always tend to prefer over expansive landscapes.

My idea for the frame is basically the opening of a gate to a new world... the design of which unifies the elements and leads into the logotype below.

This is the initial color sketch, but I'm pretty happy with it and may keep it as the final color sketch. I'll give it a couple days of tweaking here and there before I decide.

Work on the background is almost finished and now I'm concentrating on the individual elements like the smoke and rocket ships.

Oh.... GMT.... Greenwich Mean Time... I totally did not get that. Jeez now don't I feel stupid.

Well, next time I'll finish a week early, so I won't have to worry about time zones. Part of me says this was a whole waste of time, but then again my entry turned out pretty good, so it wasn't a total waste. I'm not happy with a lot of it, maybe I'm sitting at 70% approval rating from myself... I love the background, but the figures and the main spaceship is just waaaay too cartoony for my tastes. Oh well... Better luck next time.
