If you use the new Retarget Expression,
is there a way to "bake the motion" to the target?
Or do I always need the source, neutral object and the target in the scene?

you should be able to do that by adding position /rotation tracks to your targets and then selcect the targets in timeline and use function-> bake object
if I remember right (I did extensive baking on a character in a project to use in with MotionBlend in R9 (not available inR10) but it should basically work the same way if "bake" is still available in R10--

Thanks Oli,
there is a bake animation in R10. But I cant get a correct bake animation. The baked target doesnt transfer clean weights. It is scrumbled.
Maybe you or somebody can make a short tut? Because there is no instruction in the help or Quicktuts.

I have to learn my way around in R10 first, too, thus unable to give advice right now :-

here is a scene to test. may be the problem is because the rigg is with bones and not with joints.
But retarget is working with bones here in this scene.

Hmmm--
I see now what the problem is--
since there are no sequences anymore, how do you transfer the keys in one swwep from one skeleton to the other?

Baking works as expected, but the weights get lost on the baked duplicate of the skeleton that is generated---

To be honest, I the more I see that timeline is really W:I.P. right now, it would be helping if Maxon said when they plan to publish the rest (NLA, FBX export for joints), so we can judge if it is worth finding a way to work without the missing higher level animation tools, or if we could wait and save us the pain... as anyone doing more complex animation will be faced with these problems, and since there is no backwards-compatibility we cannot switch back and animate in R9.

I have fiddled with it, tried dragging around in timeline and tested possible modifier keys but could not manage to transfer a hierarchy of keys to the other skeleton---

yes I had the same problems.
I mailed Maxon support, but they didnt answer yet.
... and I aked them when we can get a update. The answer was: we dont know. may be in 1/2 year.
hmm. I hope maxon will do it faster.
