people love to fantasize about it a lot, truth is actually quite simple.

the initial planned name (the one used during beta) was sumatra, for several reasons it wasn't possible to use it tho.

During the development of what later on became XSI, Softimage was working under the MS umbrella, and this meant they were working on a new file format that was .X on testosterone.
The beta name for the file format was dotXSI (.X for SoftImage).

Since most people thought it sounded cool etc. , and Sumatra wasn't an option anymore, they named the app according to the file format that would be used as a connection in the future (future at the time, now it's a current reality).

That's all folks, no weird acronyms or hidden puns on words.
