"TORONTO (Hollywood Reporter) - Grabbing a piece of the $20 billion video game industry, the Canadian government on Wednesday said it would invest CAN$2 million ($1.8 million) to develop homegrown video games.

Montreal-based Telefilm, Ottawa's film financier, invited Canadian video game makers to compete for the financing through a process entitled the Great Canadian Video Game Competition.

"With the input and support of industry, this competition will give independent firms the leverage to attract required financing and distribution opportunities for its intellectual property," Telefilm executive director Wayne Clarkson said.

An initial 10 companies will be chosen early in the new year to vie for public financing to get their product to the market."

They'll probably set one up in Whitehorse first to milk the Alaska/Yukon/NWT talent.

I second the motion :D

2 million doesn't seem like very much though.

It's about time. T.O. is not exactly the mecca for game devs. This is a great motion!

As a proud Calgarian/Albertan I'm quite in agreement with you there. Calgary has a rockin art's community but we need more CG/VFX/Movie Industries to relocate here.

That lone Alaska/Yukon/NWT talent is already working comfortably in a big Hollywood studio, with no plans of going back.

I'll thumbs up that motion as well... :D

Although any market in Alberta would be a great thing. I've just started my studio in the last couple months. It has been a bit of an uphill battle, but my feet are starting to settle on the ground. Gonna have to start hiring soon, especially if some of my current jobs lead to more work.
