As a little fun project i started to modell the most famous droid around :) at least for me

here is a shot of my start of the basic geometry:

http://www.quantum2k.de/temp/r2d2-0003.jpg

a little test shot of the geometry using 3dsmax
http://www.quantum2k.de/temp/r2d2-0004.jpg

the start of adding all the hatches, fans, access ports.... and so on
i also reduced the height of the dome a bit. my first blueprints fooled me a bit there :)
http://www.quantum2k.de/temp/r2d2-0005.jpg

i plan to go for all the detail he had. and adding at least the major gadgets of the movies (the original triology´)

Looking good so far....no complaints here. I particularly like the legs with the wires curling round.
What are you using as reference?

thx to both of you

@swordsman - I use a set of pretty detailed blueprints to get the geometry right and tons of images i found on the net for the proportions and the "feeling" :)

Artoos second visit to Brazil :D

there are still 3 panels and 2 fan inlets missing before the front is complete.
and i am aware of the mesh error above the two arms. they are caused by a quick and dirty export to max of the main structure surrounding the panels and inlets. will be gone with the next export :)

hey guys&girls, give me some input now and then :wavey:

update time

the front is as good as finished. one inlet is still missing, and the exhaust port is for now just cutted out and needs to be modeled.
the back is also finished, will post an image later. if the minor stuff if ready and exported to max i will start on the "head" :)

Hey Brax

Its looking great- I must have missed your last update hence the no input coming from here. The detail is looking very nice. I can't really fault it :)

Hey man! You rocky rock Star Wars rocks! yes yes, love that character the most! Nicely done, I really love the detail on the front and the (yes yes) realistic feelin it already has, maybe you should make the wires bezier corners --> smooth, because you can see that they are not smooth on the detail view and higher the segments!

and now : :applause: :applause: and ofcourse

Braxton
02-13-2003, 10:43 AM
hehe the wires are only temp :) but you are right at these export settings a segmentation can be seen :) will raise the polycount on those when i am have finished the "legs" and export them over to max. right now i am figuring out which settings of the rhino export are right for the corresponding part.

R2s back is also close to finish. compared to the front it is rather boring though :)

The back does indeed look a bit pale if you compaire it with his front, but I guess that is how he looks! nice model anyway, don't forget the backups!

I know how it is to model that little bugger I did a version myself in C4D not too long ago. Taking a look at your website I noticed that you have alot of sci-fi ships. Were have you been getting your blueprints/reference material from? Just wondering

Braxton
02-14-2003, 08:44 PM
actually those are not my own models. as you can see on every image are the original creators of the models used stated. the models themselves can be aquired on sites like www.scifi-meshes.com

and yeah. everyone says modelling R2 is a basic and easy task... pretty far away from reality :)

Right thanks for the info. I've visited your website, but the question I posed was in reference to where you get your reference material from? Online through web search engines, by purchasing modeling kits, aliens etc? Or do you just eyeball which is doubtful. It just seemed your post reply to me was a little defensive, though I am uncertain why, I meant no disrespect and you have great stuff.

Braxton
02-14-2003, 09:12 PM
oh sorry! didnt take your post as an offense to me! my english lacks its expression i really intended sometimes i fear :)

if i need references, for R2 i mainly use google to find me some blueprints and tons of "real" images. thats about what i use. for my F4U Corsair project i even bought myself a model kit and some books to get me more infos.

cheers
Brax.

PS- the project section is gonna be updated soon with both projects. my website is pretty new and i didnt get to it till now

finally got time to work on it again :)

started to adding "head details"

as last time i did not raise antialiasing to full to save myself render time, so the edges of the head patches might look a bit rough, but they are ok :)

He looks like R2D2 proportion wise. You should save your time and stop rendering in HDRI every single time you want to post an update. As for the model you have a ways to go to get in all the detail R2D2 has. Maybe try something original next time?

Dude, what the hell is your problem?!
last 2 posts Ive seen of yours (thats 2 too many than i wanted to see) you're a complete @#$!% ... you act like my 9yr old nephew! :shame:

You are so negative.... if you dont like the HDRI (i actually believe its GI or FinalGathering effect) then just comment on the model, thats really what hes after since its still a WIP.... jesus, if you dont have anything positive to say, then seriously, dont say anything.

(ive seen your work on that goblin, and thats pretty high calibur, and if you feel everyone is so below you, then get a grip man, we are all at different skill levels, I think you should be a bit more compassionate)

Anywho, good job man, the R2-D2 is really coming along!
GREAT DETAIL!! :surprised

is it poly? nurbs? what package did you use? :D

Cheers!

@entangle - thx

@JFrench - i did.. i did at least "fillet" the edges what should be the equivalent. I have some shots of the "original" real model and the edges dont seem to be more beveld than mine. but i will look into it again

@martyyr25 - thx for the link :)

@Are3D - first see brianellebrachts and Gremlins answer... second its not HDRI. its a simple and fast rendering brazil standart setup in max. i will try original stuff when i feel good enough to give it a try

@brianellebracht - thx and you are right

@gremlin - thx as well and to your question. I am using Rhino3D for modelling so its buildt with NURBS and export it over to max with Brazil for rendering

Cheers

Hey, good stuff mate. Been missing that for so long :D

The funky panels below the head, need a wee bit more detail though. They look rather dull right now. I would extrude them inwards, bevel and extrude with the same value outwards, That would give a cool detail to those panels :)

Very nice work, accurate and convining model, its nice to see R2D2 being done at last :) No crit from me really, its comming along very nicely looking forward to the texturing phase.

hey, R2D2 :)... loved him in the movie :D... great char, and great model... but like someone has already said: don't forget to bevel in the end :).... keep going...

I think that perhaps what Are3D was actually trying to say is that you would save time if you cut back on render-intensive stuff when rendering tests for a WIP. Since he thought you were using HDRI, I think he was actually trying to be helpful

Although the last comment was a little abrasive perhaps.
And I must admit that some of your recent posts have left a lot to be desired - cool it with the insults, Are3D. How would you like it if people posted comments like that in your own thread?

Please show a little more respect in future.

Anyhoo, I think the model is coming along nicely :)
I think it might be fun to texture him a little messed up (as if he has possibly just returned from Dagobah)... Just a thought. Dirty stuff is always so much more fun! :D

I'm just kidding. I know who R2 is, and this is R2 for sure!!

He looks pretty good.

You should team up with the dude that had the Sandtrooper on here a while ago.

Looks Great! Unfrontunately most of the replies youll get are just because its Star Wars related, lol. CGTalkers respond to this stuff like its a gift from god. :D Anyways, it's still good work. Congrats.
