Woooo!
Thanks for the article paul - nicely laid out!
One minor correction though - its Shinjuku, not Shinzi-ku! Plus, the inspiration for her came from the teens of Harajuku.
Cheers

Hi Andy,
Luv yur work since long time. Very nice japanese-european design mix which is very rare. Often japanese inspire design looks quite awfull. Your work is just great. I love your Harajaku character and posing.
Ive a 2 questions however if you don't mind. How long does it take to create one character from scratch to final posing and what skinning tool do you use in max?

Nice read and truly wonderful work Andy! I have only one complaint.... you don't show nearly enough of your work as I would like! When's that 300 pages full colour 'Art of Andy Hickenbbottom' hardcover hitting the shelves? :)

Cool article. I've been following your work since seeing your Streets of Rage game art entry, you've really developed your own style since.
The nerd is my favourite, great poses! Congrats man.

LOL!
I know exactly what you mean by that! 'Yo yo yo yo yo!' indeed
Rockstar north, eh? Looking forward to GTA4! - Hurry up with it :)
As for the timescale per character, it takes me around 4 weeks working in my spare time and weekends. It depends on how picky i get. Some characters i finish quicker than others. Tokyo Girl took a lot less time to make than Suzie.

You've become quite the celebrity. Well-deserved of course. I find your work very appealing. Too bad this article didn't make front page while Suzie was still up there... you'd definitely have an unbeatable record for number of things up on there simultaneously if you held four spots (though having three things already seems pretty unbeatable IMHO).
Look forward to seeing what's coming down the road!

Hey, Andy. Major kudos on the article. Well-spoken, and well-deserved, to say the least. Also, belated congratulations on getting Harajuku Girl into Exotique 2!
One minor point I noticed in the article - my inner editor acts up on me from time to time - the following appears at the very beginning:
He is creative, with a knack for ‘cartoon’ characters and drawing generally.
Creative, strong knack for cartoon characters, yes... but I seem to remember you mentioning in a couple of threads that you don't do concept sketches for your models because you don't really have a knack for drawing... I wasn't sure if this had changed, but the end quote in the article reads:
At the moment he wants to finish his short film, learn ZBrush and normal mapping, improve anatomical modeling skills, learn advanced shaders and lighting, learn advanced rigging skills, take up drawing: All that good stuff.
I certainly don't want to imply that you can't draw, or put you down in any way... it just struck me as odd, especially given the disparity of the two sentences.
All that aside, it's a great article, and we all eagerly await your next work. :)

Youre right. My drawing abilities are a bit iffy right now. I was pretty good at secondary school, but ive had virtually no practice since then, and have become too reliant on computers
Gotta get me an intuos 3 and start up again.

Hey Andy. Good going on the front page, just one little thing. The girl in the yellow top; is anyone else seeing the chunk taken out of her butt? Maybe Paul grabbed himself a piece of memorabilia.:)

"Virtual Diseases", the new form of VD. Anyways, congrats Andy on the recent burst of recognition on the frontpage. If I'm not missing anything that's 4 in one week? Suzie, this article, Office Girl on the CGJobs link, and Santa Girl? on the Ballistic Banner.
Cheers

This article should be done a lot time ago.
As a big fun of your characters, (remmember low poly stuff? heh) and I admire your style 'cos its sweet like a cartoon, but so freaking detailed, I really dig every work from ya. But still playboy chick and few other works like a rollerblade in low poly u have made long time ago are my favorite.
So Andy .... keeep it ROOOOLLLLINNNNNN !!

I have been a big fan of your work for a while. My daughter and I love your Bunny character. You two latest models are just as good. There is a lot of personality in them. Keep up the great work.
I would love to see a short from you like Blur does every so often. I would be a lot of fun.
