Hi all,

First serious attempt at matte painting here. Comments and advice very much welcome; it's for the opening title shot of an independent film I'm directing. The idea is that the camera will pan out of a window (live action) and over a stormy forest at nighttime. Here it is so far:

Hi good start, a few coments...

You need to play around with your levels and mute the light source that's hitting the tree tops, alternatively give them a light source, like the moon perhaps.

Second thing that springs to mind, you need a focal point, a point of interest, something that draws the viewer into the shot, a little too plain right now, i'm not sure what your storyline is but maybe some temples peaking out of the canopy or a river that breaks it up a little.

A good base but needs more

I agree totally with everlite, I also think that for that distance the haze or fog is too saturated with blue, stormy clouds have more white / gray in it volume and a lot less saturation of color

I donīt feel quite right the aereal perspective

my advice is that you should look for real photo references and see how the weather affects the whole enviroment, you will see that this one is too saturated in color for the mood you want

Thanks for the suggestions.

The storyline is difficult to explain, but temples or suchlike wouldn't fit. I'll certainly try toning the blue down (the shot will be ultimately rather dramatic, animated with lightning and rain mind). The shot will be mixed with a day-for-night shot which I have completed.

As far as a focal point is concerned - the title of the film will be superimposed over the top of this matte; the idea of the two hills was just to bring the eye toward the centre.

I'd love to work some more distant hills into it though, and some more realistic rain haze .... any suggestions on how I should work these in?
