View Full Version : Fat Guy WIP:
Phasmatis 02-10-2003, 05:10 AM I've been modeling this head for the last day or so. It's now come to the point where I'm not sure what to do next, I'm going to work on the ear a bit more as it ain't as good as it could be, plus I think I'm going to have to make a new bump map for the forehead since this one doesn't quite cut it. Apart from that, any crits or comments?

Not bad so far. I would emphasise is fatness by adding fat rolls under is chin, cheeks etc. It would give him some more character. good stuff so far.

I've replaced the picture above with my latest work on it, I'm given him another chin and I've also put a bit more detail in the eye brows, btw I'm not trying to make this look realistic I want it to look cartoony with a bit of realism.
Thanks Sebek27, I used point modelling to make him. :)
Here's a wire for anyone who is interested.

ok here are my marks :p
skin: good softness, you achieved a good appearance, now you have only to paint good maps (expecially bump map)
modeling: you made a good head with a really low poly count, great! How many polys for the unsmoothed cage?
lighting: it's nice but you can do really better than this, look at the lighting tuts at www.warpedspace.org they will surely help you.
animation: can't wait to see this guy animated

great modelling. :bounce: :applause:  really like the look in his eyes
i would suggest to soften the edges of the bags under his eyes a bit more as they stand out too much.
also, you have two very broad lines going from his mouth down on the sides of his chin (don't know how to describe it otherwise). i think, if somebody is that much overweight, he doesn't have these sharp facial features anymore.
and i'm not sure, but i think, the ears are a bit too high and are not softened enough.

I've updated the picture, I've softened the edges of the eyes and I've put another crease in his checks but I may have over done it a little, I think I'll have to soften them too. I'm going to remake the ears, I've had nothig but trouble with them, so that should be fun :hmm:
I'm definitely going to animate him, he's going to be a test subject for facial animation.
The ploy count before I made the check creases was 884 (polys) I forgot to look at how many polys he is now.

Oh yeah, thanks for the light tuts ThirdEye, I've been looking for good tuts for quite a while but I've never found any that helped. :)

Coooooooooooooooooooool. Good lighting, good character, I love this!
how did you achieve the soft lighting look?

Ok, I've done quite a lot with this one, I've remade the ear, it's looking a lot better than before IMO. I've the bag under his his are now smaller although only slightly and I've made the check lines a bit less defined.
The lighting is just a light dome (half a sphere with 10 segments) and a spot light facing the front with a shadow map at 750x750.

love the ear and the lips!
about the bags under his eyes: i think, the part of the skin that is close to the nose should blend in with the rest of the face a bit more. right now they look like plastic-bags under his skin.
he's turning out great! what are your plans for him? lipsyncing?
Phasmatis

Thanks, yeah the bags under his eyes do need work, I shall work on them tomorrow.
Yeah, lip syncing is something I want to do with him, I haven't really done any facial animation so I'm using him to learn a bit more. If he turns out to be pretty good, I'll make a short film out of him.

I've heard of timesplitters but I've never played it, I may do a search for some screen shots or something.
Here's the latest, I'm pretty much happy with it now, I think that's it as far as the modelling goes, I'll start UV mapping him now.

Coming along really nice there...
Here a couple of screens for ya. (Sorry for the poor quality and the lack of facial detail, but they were the best I could find...:)

Hmmm... I think I'll need to give some clothes at some point so that maybe the kind of style he needs, Thanks. :)
Here's a little test animation, it's a bit boring but I've found out how to use Posemixer now , I think I may have to use bones with soft IK to make it look good. Then I can have his checks and other flabby bits move slightly as he turns, which should look pretty cool.

Oh yeah, I've also changed the skin slightly, I would love everyone's opinion on it, does it look better than the other pictures or worse?
Here's a still incase you can't download the animation:

IMO I really like the more yellowish skin typ better, think its suits the comical way better, if you are going for that...
Cheers

I've decided to make him more of a fat (futuristic) soldier, while I don't want him to look real as such, I don't want him to look too cartoony. So if you look at the skin again in my last picture, do you think it's more cartoony or more real than other pictures? I like the newer skin personally but I would love other peoples opinion. :)
I UV mapped him (although not properly yet) so I had to get rid of the bumps... Once I map him properly I will make a good bump for the whole of his face.
