Yeah, Those muscles are just roughies. This is like 8 hours worth of work. Sorry to hear about your dislike of minotaurs. I've written about 'em, and I'm quite fond of them.

This character is to make up for a previous attempt in NURBS a few months back. Back then I had no idea about parametrization or patching, so it looked alright, but quite generic, and featureless.

This is Polygons now, a couple of characters, and techniques later.

Hey Magi, it's coming along great, however it looks like some things are a little off.. i think, the arms need to be closer to the torso... they look like they where "added" to the body like any typical NURBS character (although you made him poly's), and the detail on the arms looks way too straight forward, and it looks like the flow of the lines that define the muscles are too straight, you should curve them up a bit... accent the muscles more, it seems they deserve that compared to the torso, which i think you did a wonderful job with. The only other thing i'm not too comfortable with is the horns.. i think they probably need to curve forward a little more and be more sharp. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the tips. I agree. Workin on em right now

Update. This has been the fastest character I've made yet... and oddly enough, the most detailed. I should be done within two days tops. After that, I might start doing the inevitable tweaking that leads nowhere for a couple of days more.

Dont mind the crotch/ glut area... It's just a stand in for now. I'm building over it to connect the legs and torso.

Hey there Digital Magi, thanks for taking my advice, i think it made quite a difference and it looks great... now you should take a look at the back of your legs... where they bend.. looks like you could add some more info there, also.. the hands (which are not attached yet), look real... human maybe too skinny for the rest of the character.. have you thought of maybe designing hands that are a cross between bull feet and human hands? well, i guess that's not exactly how a minotaur is supposed to be, but i just thought about it and figured i'd be cool. However, if you're keeping the human hands.. i suggest making them chunkyer.. or however you say it. Looking great man, keep it up!

Good call! I was thinking on making hands loke the teenage mutant ninja turtles... beefy hands with only three thick fingers.

Also I'm thinking on cultural accessories. Stuff like nailing a horseshoe to the back of your hand as a sign of bravery, or a weapon that has twin blades that are born from both eithrer sides of the handle in a hoof shape. It would be used in a punching fashion. I'll post it up in the morning.

Any ideas on that or clothing (no generic loincloths please) would be welcome. I want to break the tipical image of the usual minotaur.

Youre in Fullsail too, right, hairball?

Heres the weapon I was thinking to emulate for the minotaur. That's something he'll bring out instead of a regular knife or dagger in combat. Kinda looks like a hoof, so It can be one of those cultural details I was telling you about. He deserves WAAAYY bigger as a primary attack weapon. Dont want to give him the typical petrified treetrunk, or the huge warhammer. I was thinking on a halbred with a morning star head on the other side of the pole. The spikes made of sharpened bone.

here is mine minotaure i've been doing for school, what dyou think about it ??

Digital Magi
02-14-2003, 03:25 PM
I like the snout, jeje. makes him look like a boar-minotaur. The pink skin might be throwing me that way too. How long have you been in 3d, willofars?

It's a good roughie to make a character. It this poly, nurbs or Subd?

thanks as it's the way i was thinking my minotaure would be, well i wanted it to have a plastic and lightly shiny skin .... well i have the hands still to do and i'm not really good at that

i'm making 3D from about september, but i've played around with max before

it's just poly and most of all extruding edges, well i know he looks rather like a dog for the head but it comes from my imaginaaaation

i attached a closer look to his face

Hey Magi- i think your deltoids on him are a little off, so are his Tri Ceps. Like said before, go look on google for body builders or somtin, those guys have all the muscle groups so well built that u can see it all! lol, even though its gross. But your fore arms look pretty good.

And i forgot to mention his pecs r off by a bit too.

Hey Magi, sorry i've been away for a couple days, i think the weapon is a pretty good idea, but you probably want to make sure to design the hands and then the weapon.. i'd be easier that way, so you can design the weapon to fit his hands.. ninja turtles wasn't exactly what i was thinking of but in the same lines... as for clothing or armor, what type of environment is he gonna be in and what time or age or society does he live in? basically, design his outfit to "fit" where he takes up a place in time, what he does and where does it... think about that and maybe share it with us and we might be able to help. Oh and finally, i work at Fulsail. Keep up the good work man!

I think the head looks awesome. If you could get a good texture and some good lighting on the head and do some closeups you could do some pretty photorealistic stuff I think. Do you plan to get it set up to animate? Facial expressions too?

Digital Magi,

Great work. I love the style that you have with minotaurs. It seems to have more finesse than plain brute strength, and yet, I wouldn't talk smack in his face because he's pretty big. Then again, all my references to minotaur are from video games and old illustrated mythological books.

A nice thing to see would be some fur just above his hooves like a big Clidesdale (Clydsdale? Budwiser Horsey?) would have. It'd be a nice touch I think. As for a new way to UV map this sucker, I have no clue, but I hope some kind soul will let us both in on a new way of mapping. Overall I think you did a great job of modeling. Kudos to you, Digital.

Lu

P.S. Are you going to animate him?

RiotManZ
02-26-2003, 11:13 AM
yes, this one is a real killer!!
you enhanced him a lot, didnŽt you? he looks awesome now.
pure power.

only thing iŽm not dŽaccord with is his belly muscles. he has an eight-pack there instead of an six-pack. maybe it is intended but i always thought the minotaur is a mixture of human and stallion.

Digital Magi
02-28-2003, 01:46 AM
Thanks for the compliments! I'm glad I'm on the right track. I still have lots to do to get him to the right level. About eh abs, in reality, we all have an eight pak. It takes some SERIOUS buffing up for them to show, though.

I'll get to work on more detailed legs, Harden him up like a steroid junky and bring out the smaller muscles. What do you guys think?
