View Full Version : switching Maya navigation to MAX settings
ronny 02-10-2003, 12:49 AM Hi, if there's one thing about MAX that i like better than Maya, it's the navigation settings. Does anybody know how to change Maya's navigation settings (i.e. track and dolly tool key modifiers)?
I can't seem to find out how to do this anywhere.
Basically, I want to be able to track/pan with just the middle mouse button without having to push alt as well. Alt + middle click drag would dolly. Also, it would be nice to zoom by holding ctrl + alt + middle click dragging.
The reason why I want to switch is because I use a Wacom tablet at work for animating in MAX and a mouse at home for animating in Maya. Well now I want to use a wacom at home too, and I don't really feel like getting used to different controls.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks,
ronny

I don't think this is possible. But knowing Max, they'll just copy Maya's navigation settings in the next release anyways. ;)

unfortunately, maya didn't copy enough of the max tool set with the last update. we really need better curve tools.
yeah, it'd be nice if all these programs would allow you to remap mouse functions too. but i can only remap using the mouse setup in the systems panel.

just learn the maya one, you'll be trying to emulate that in max once you've got used to it

by changing these hotkeys you would only change other essential hotkeys....the mmb is used for snapping and for the sliders .....look in the hotkey editor if you want to change your hotkeys.

Good point. Forgot I used MMB in the graph editor for moving keys and such. Guess I'll have to just suck it up. :o)
Yeah, the hotkeys menu doesn't have the option of assigning functions to mouse clicks anywhere, so it's probably not something you can change. Oh well.
hmmm if your using a 5 button mouse, you can always map ALT and SHIFT (or CTRL) to the side buttons... it's not quite the same as max of course, but you can still do all your navigating with one hand which is nice ;)

i had the same problem - working with different 3d packages and game engine editors and there was always the need to adapt to different viewport control methods.
i now use keyboard shortcuts to activate viewport navigation modes - for example "o" activates rotate/orbit, "p" - pan, "z" - zoom in/out. not as elegant as the builtin mousebutton+alt combinations but you have to learn it only once and it's not much slower. it's also quite compatible with softimage - a big plus for me :)
nowadays i have forgotten most of the original navigation controls of all those packages and simply install my own preferences at the boxes i work with ;)

I don't think you can easily if at all change the usage of the mouse buttons for Maya

I don't believe that, how much people puts Maya and Max in the same state! I'm realy sorry but only the newbie has an excuse for that.
Discreet, don't care about future. Clearly, I can see it.
What in the world are you on about?

Man! I think you are giving yourself a headache for nothing..
As an old Maxer I can say that Maya's Interface (and navigation especially) are ingenious.
A whole department (like 100 people) was employed to develop it. The problem was how to achieve maximum productivity and get fastest and easiest access to a wast amount of functions. That's how Hotbox, Shelves, Marking menues, and THE NAVIGATION control got here.
I sugest you not to bother with changing, just use it for a while (it good both with mouse and Wacom), and soon you gonna want to change Max's controls. :)

I think AW has lost much people that developt the first ideas of the interface.
Or now they have no more ideas
Example: Why is there under edit Polygons "Extrude Face and Extrude Edge"
It must callt extrude! And do it on every
component. The function is in maya.
Give me a interface example and in 75% i have a better solution for it.
I like Maya verymuch. But the Interface has much more potential
sorry for my bad english :-)
