Im trying to simulate the effect of stained glass when light is shining through, but when I render, there is only one side that shows: the side with the light. The other side does not show. I have tried many things. I have tried just making the image transparent, or adding a transparent map, but I seem to get are the really cool colorful shadows, but I still cannot see the other side of the stained glass window. Do I have to have another light to make the other side of the stained glass appear?

post the image you got, and perhaps your hypershade shader screenshot.

If I understood right, then yes, you would probably need another light on the dark part of the window, however, this other light should be linked only to the window, otherwise, it may wash away the color spots you obtain on the floor or whatever surface they shine on.

By the way, to get a more realistic look, you might want to consider using mental ray, as Maya's native renderer will give you a hard time if you want to go for a more realistic look. Take a look at the tutorials in: http://www.motiondesign.biz/ to give you an idea on how to use some advanced features of it, which when tweaked in the correct way, can help you to create the stained glass efect better.

no idea how you set it up.. but you could try switching "receive shadow" off for the glass..
maybe thats it

cheers

I figured it out. It had to do something with the Translucencey. I also tried the light linking thing too and that worked, so I guess I have some good options at my fingertips. Thanks.
