View Full Version : Maya's Renderer?
Eudaimic 02-09-2003, 09:33 PM Hey,
What's the quality of Maya's native renderer compared to other the renderers out there? What can/can't it do, where are it's strengths/weaknesses?
Should I rely on it over Brazil for my next uni project?

Yep (http://www.aliaswavefront.com/en/products/maya/mentalray.shtml) .
It's a little rough around the edges, and itsn't nearly as well integrated as mental ray is in Softimage, but it'll get the job done.

What do you mean specifically by 'rough around the edges'?

Not everything is supported yet. No Maya SubDs, no post effects like glow, paint effects, or fur. It's definitely usable though, just be sure to read the docs to see what's supported and what's not.

compared to other 3D apps, mayas rendering engine is not so good I'm afraid. One of the best ones out there is Lightwave as far as the render engine goes.
I have HEARD good things about rendering things out of maya in brazil, but I haven't tried it myself. Another good one is suppose to be renderman, but I haven't tried that one either.

if u have the money go with renderman. if u want to use mayas native renderer be prepared for a lot of learning. i will not agree with the statement that it has really poor quality. it's as good renderer as any other. just not many people know how to use it. ive seen amazing stuff done with mayas renderer. i know that some german animation studio is working on full-lengh animated feature which is completly made with maya and her built in render engine...
the 'only' thing u will have to do is learn it... no one says it will be an easy :(

...renderman if your uni's willing to pay for it...
Maya's renderer is just fine. It'll do the job ( sometimes a little slowly on NT). But of course, if you absolutely HAVE to have GI you could use MR. The problems with glow/paint effects/fur can all be fixed in post really, just takes a bit more tweaking than with a non-GI renderer
