Well I promised 2 weeks ago that there would a new release on some close-ups to the textbook PR images.....and now here they are. The next installment for the release of the textbook will be the Spine/Thorax and all the Paraspinal muscles/tendons and ligaments.
Full leg and hip flexors(the ones you can hurt if you do sit-ups incorrectly)

wow. that looks impressive. are those animatable?? whats the purpose?? if their just for stills, then u might wanna fix up on the lighting and background there.
i really wanna know if u can accurately flex all of those muscles though. if u can I WANNA SEE SOME MPEGS!!
anyway, nice modelling and texturing. FIX THE TOE.

Error404....LOL, actually the big toe actually isnt through the floor. Its a bit of an illusion because the other toes are much more rounded at the ends thus cast a larger shadow, but the bone of the big toe is quite flat on the end.
ee01akk2....the entire human anatomy structure will be fully animated when its complete. The rigging is about 90% completed, but that has come to a stand still because of press/pre-press problems with the textbook.
FYI(As to why the book is taking so long, well we have had a hell of a time with press's, color corrections, layouts and press scalability. We were looking at high production web offset, but there was a trade off in quality, so we were finally able to find a sheet feed press that could scale to 40,000 books in 10 days of press time. Quality was also an issue but this current press company can do 6 color runs, which gives us the quality that we needed....so I think we have it beat.

Excellent work! I'm curious as to how you go about modeling the anatomy. Do you have a medical skeleton there you use for reference, and have you scanned photos of it or do you just work from looking at a live reference? The reason I ask is because I've spent some frustrating hours this weekend trying to model a scapula using just my anatomy books, and I'm finding the complex surfaces very difficult to get a firm grasp on (especially because the bone and its features aren't exactly aligned with the axis of the world.
I look forward to seeing your future updates! Very cool!

Soljarag...the layers of the human body depends on the location. Id estimate that on the back there are approx 11 layers.

MDuffy....yes I know exactly what you mean. Thats the problem with current anatomy books is that the images are orthographic. Which makes it tough to percieve the quantitative nature of 3D. Personally I had a large list of doctors/surgeons, and cadaver labs to fall back on. For the skeleton alone, I had my own full size skeleton @ home, which helped with some of the macro elements of the bone, but even it was lacking in detail. Good luck, and just remeber it took me 3yrs and aprox 5000 hours to create this model.
stephen2002....well, stick around cause thats exactly whats gonna happen. Id estimate, that all the rigging and prelim animations should be complete with a month after the book hits the press for retail....then its onto the software.

Damn! The detail of the bones is impressive. The modelling is awsome as well. Not sure about the texture of the muscles. Kind of feels like plastic instead of live tissue. Don;t let me spoil this awsome piece of work.

Banshax....thanks, in static its very tough to get around that look of the muscle to find just the right mix of wet, yet not glossy look. In motion it looks much better.

Soljarag....here is a little breakdown on this entire project.
Created with:Started with 3D Studio Max 3, then finished with 4.2
Mapped and Textured with: Deep 3D paint
Render: Mental Ray(it had no problem with the 2gig texture load)
Poly count: 1.5 million with over 4000 independently modeled objects.
Project: Time spent: 3yrs appox 5000hours
the model make-up(modeling techniques used), I would say 10% is nurb, 60% is spline, and 30% is poly......and hundreds of hours in trial and error.
Use: Textbooks, live footage compositing and software

hmm No Zazz is from Alberta (edmonton) but he's over at VFS, I'm in edmonton as well, this is an amazing model :D so this is for a text book or something? want to send a copy to wp. wagner school in edmonton lol... thats amazing work, How did you keep your focus, and not get distracted or bored of it?

BiTMAP.....ahhh, ok. How does he like it over at VFS. I have a cousin and a nephew that are looking into that school. Yes this is all for 3D human anatomy textbook. 420 pages of just the structural anatomy(first time its ever been done in 3D). As for a book, I believe the publishers have an open policy that they will send a free copy to any school wishing to have one. If you want to get an instructor/director/ or Prof to email me, Ill make sure we put em on the list for a textbook.
Staying focused.....well, thats kinda tough, but this project could help my family out for a long time.....so it was worth it. Id have to say my daughter and wife kept me focused.

jerO....ROFLMAO, yup you said it. There were times in the past yr when Id be so tired that I would hallucinate...pretty freaky sometimes. The past yr alone I blew 3000hours on this project.
