hey guys, in maya, i rendered a bunch of .iff files into a folder and dragged it into my project. i try to export to a .mov but all i get from the drop down menu is "Macromedia Flash (SWF)" and no other options. also, that option is greyed out so i cant select it. any thoughts?

Well, you can't export image sequences, you have to create a composition. AE is a compositing program, is it not? And yeah, I know I'm arrogant: Reading the manual would have saved you from this embarassement.

well, that sounds like you NEVER EVER used after effects ;)
these questions are so basic, they dont fit into this forum.
as mylenium said: read the manual. if you stuck at some point - come back.

by the way: use the render queue to export it.

good luck,

ok, see this is my problem. i never even knew what a composition was until a day ago. literally all i did was drag in my movie and i would hit export and i would have a myriad of extentions to export to. no problems at all. and still i want to export to .mov and when i render the composition all i get for an option is a .avi. what was i doing right then that im not doing now?

with your composition selected in the project window, goto composition > make movie.
it may open up a "save as" panel and give you AVI as the only option. just hit ok.
then it will open the render queue. THIS is where you really set everything.
you can change the name by clicking on the name. you can change the file format (to MOV) by clicking on the format type that's just to the left of the file name. if Quicktime is not in this list in the render queue, chances are somehow your installation got messed up.

just hit the render button when you've got everything set in the render queue how you want it.
