So, im going to be starting my first character model in Maya. Is the entire character modeled in one piece, including accessories? (belt, straps, pouches etc) All from one object? Or would different pieces be modelled individually? If they are modeled individually, how does the character moving / bending affect these separate objects?

Basically what im asking is for peoples own approaches to this.

Thanks,

yeah you definitely want to break it up if possible, else texturing and skinning for animation will be hell. The higher poly it is, the more you should consider separating elements.

After that you should group everything togheter and skin it to your bone system like that... everything in the group will get deformed by the bones... if you have accesories that are not cloth for example and do not need to be deform with the character but only move with him like glasses or things of that sort you could constrain them to a piece of the character or you could just parent them... it really depends on what you are doing...

good luck to ya
