Hi all

I want to know how to do a Walk Cycle for my Robot. I have rigged it up with skeleton and IK handle. Its a pain to do it manually. I want it to walk naturally like it should. Is there another way. I am sort of a new bie so step by step would be nice.

Thanx in Advance

so i can assure you, there is no "make cool robot walk cycle" button or mel command in maya. you`ll have to do it definitly by yourself.

Try animating a walk cycle by hand.....it's not easy as it sounds. I'd the hardest time but I finally caught on, I think. Rigging and using IK is much easier to do, and the instant feedback is very helpful, unlike pencil tests. Anyway, you're prb looking for somekind of plug-in to use for walk cycle...unless you've liabrary of animation in some folder...you might as well do it by hand...it's good way to start immersing oneself to character anim. One might as well get used to mo-cap too..

Look for a photo time-lapse book by Muybridge..it will help you with human locomotion.

I'm by no means an expert at this (as my multitude of posts asking increasingly stupid questions show), but I'm fiddling with the same thing at the moment.

I suggest you get The Animator's Survival Kit by Richard Williams. It's more of a traditional animation book, but it contains all the knowledge you need to create walkcycles and animation in general.

It's bar none the best tomb of animation knowledge I've come across!

Also, if you might want to look at Kaydara's motionbuilder. I think its sorta the equivilent of max's character studio, it has alot more built in functions for character animation. If you go to 3dbuzz.com you can get a personal license for $100 a year. And alot of studios use it so its good experience to have.

Still, nothing beats doing it raw. You get much more understanding and skill that way. The book mentioned in Eudaimic's post might be the best alternative.
