Hello,

This is my first time working on one of the CGTalk Challenges, so please be gentle :)

Attached is my first go at a previs for my idea for illustrating Thistledown – Chamber 3. I’m getting a late start at this, so I consumed the novel last weekend and put this idea together.

I tried several different perspectives, but this one (looking out from one “cap” while standing on one of the suspension cables) seemed to me to be the best for portraying the grand scale of the chamber. I’m still toying with this a bit, but I think this will be my final perspective.

This was done in Bryce 6 with some help from Blender (modeling), The Gimp (textures) and Poser (female figure). Reading the FAQ, I know that Poser is application non grata, so I will do something else with this (Hand Draw the figure or sue some other Model).

Please let me know what you think.

Here is my current Bryce model looking from the ground up. I'm thinking with just a tad bit more detail I may have enough to start to give me a good framework for post work until an illustration.

Just got back from vacation (Thanksgiving holiday in the States). I did manage to do some sketches on the airplane. Included in the next few posts.

I was trying to visualize how the cables that support the buildings in Thistledown would connect to the rock. Being an avid documentary TV viewer, I thought of some of the ways they connect cable stays for large suspension bridges. This is what I came up with.

This is a rough sketch of what I think one of the tall “Golf Tee” shaped buildings would look like. From the book, I’m not sure if there are many of these, if they just sit on the center line or if they are connected to the cables or free standing. I would think that they need to be connected to the cables to be stable. Does anyone have any ideas?

Great progress there man.

It seems that the towers takes a sudden change of angle, i mean the one on the foreground and the one at the background. Probably is ok on your modelspace, but it doesnt give you the curve feeling....just a thought man...

Keep it up.

Nice Ed, it's truly dizzying and really captures a sence of what a city would be like inside of a cylinder. Adding the character will only increase the feeling of vertigo and I think that's a good thing. That said, I don't really like the character placement in your mock-up because of tangency with the tower. Maybe it won't bother me in color or maybe you should slide her to the left so that the raised arm would be on the empty left side of tower. Either way, I'm sure your final is going to be amazing.

Thanks for the great feedback. One of the things I've been really struggling with is a good camera angle to show enough of Thistledown to feel like I've got the feeling of living in a cylinder. After watching years of Babylon 5, you would think this would be easy!

The more I look at the figure, the more I think I am going to change both position and posture. I think I want a better look of amazement, which I am not getting with this current look. So, my finished picture will look a little different then this on.

Cheers and thanks for the feedback.

Nazirull, great to hear from you!

The problem as I see it is the focal length of the camera I’m using (FOV = 70 deg). I’ve got it very wide to try to get as much of the Thistledown in the scene as possible so that the viewer gets a feeling that it is a cylinder. I’ve also got the camera at a slight angle to give a sort of “off-center” feeling (sort of like a “Dutch Angle” in cinematography). This forces the tall building out of kilter. I’m hoping that the figure in the foreground will help stabilize the picture and give the viewer a better feel for what the camera is doing.

Thanks again for the great comments.

Patricia travels through the third chamber, called “Thistledown” for the first time on her second day in the Stone. As she leaves the train, she is astounded by the sights that befall her, a city much more modern then she experienced in the first chamber, with hanging buildings that spanned kilometers and Tee shaped towers that reached to the thin clouds. It was obvious that the residents of the Stone had fully mastered their environment by the time they built this chamber.
