Would anyone know about proper settings (about memory and everything) to speed up Painter (I ma using windows XP) I have a good PC, I use it for quite tough jobs like highend 3D with quite heavy softwares like Maya or compositing (after effects) and it is very fluid with those. But when Painter time is comming for me : it the most pain(t) in the neck ever. The settings in the preference seem to be complicate ! Is anyone know it ? I use to have a book explaining that for Painter 7. But since the 8 the setup and layout have changed, it is not matching with my book anymore...

(and I am not to demending in resolution in my case I am working on A4 size max with 150 ppi.°)

Jin (our dear most expert Painter user and teacher) used to have an exhaustive list of tweakings and settings to make Painter faster.

I think you may find it at her site PixelAlley (http://www.pixelalley.com/index.html)
or maybe Googling for Jin and tutorials...

Hi alvibes and tayete,

Thanks for the most kind words, tayete, and the very nice introduction.

My list was more about how to keep Painter running smoothly than how to make it run fast though, if you follow all of the suggestions, it should help prevent Painter slowing down in general and hopefully prevent crashes and lost work.

John Derry filled in the gap by writing a tutorial specifically on how to make Painter IX brushes work faster.

I'll find the links and post them here in a few minutes. Both are worth reading and saving to your hard drive for reference later on.

Be back soon!

Hi again,

I've edited my post above so if you read it earlier, you might want to read it again.

Here's the link to my list of things to do to keep Painter running smoothly. Though it was written for Painter 6, Painter 7, and Painter 8, it's still good information for Painter IX. The main difference is that the Pre-built Brush File in Painter IX has a maximum file size limit of 200 MB. When it reaches that size, Painter IX automatically resets the file to a smaller size, so we don't need to delete it as we did with earlier Painter versions.

Here's John's tutorial:

Cheers!
