Im fairly new to XSI, but not to 3d. Im wondering what the best way is to is copy/paste UV sets onto multiple objects in XSI. When I created my scene, I had hoped that all of my duplicated objects would inherit any material/UV i set on any one. Apparently i set this up incorrectly in XSI. In 3dsmax it is called an instance object.

Oh well, now the question is: whats the best way to copy and paste UV sets/materials from one object to many similar objects?

Thanks.

Try using GATOR. It's brilliant!

Thanks David,

Did some research on GATOR. Holy shit! Brilliant is right. All of the tutorials Ive found are examples of fairly wild stuff. Pretty cool.

But im still an XSI noob, and when I tried using it on my scene I found that my UVs were being glued to the parent, and were not local to the child object. Many examples of using GATOR to transfer attributes suggested aligning the parent and target objects (a pain in the ass in my scene because of the amount of duplicated objects already positioned about), so i tried that, only to find when i did go to move the child object, the UVs were still stuck to the parent object...

1. can i apply GATOR without having to align objects?
2. how can i glue copied UVs to the target object?

Have you tried Copy UVs/Paste UVs in the Texture Editor?

Wow, yeah - I was just going to post that up. Just tried it and got it to work. Seems like an obvious answer to find. :)

Also, I found that I should have created Models from my objects and then instanciate them. That would have been the answer to applying attributes globally, without having to copy/paste a thousand times... lol.

Thanks again for your thoughts David. Hey - I was curious if you use XSI at work as well, or if its just a side software for you. The reason I ask is because it seems unfortunate that not enough companies are using XSI...

Ive been 3dsmax/maya for 5 years, but now Im at Digital Kitchen, and were using XSI. Smart tools. Wish more companies adopted it into the pipeline.

What are your thoughts?
