View Full Version : Target Weld Script?
modeling-man 02-08-2003, 05:21 PM I'm obviously a Max modeler by the subject header...anyways I know there is a merge vertice tool but is there a tool or script that allows me to weld a vertice to a specific vertice? and thus remove it from the model?
Any help on this would be awesome.

i guess there's a script for that on highend3d
a workaround would be to snap your vertice to the one you want to weld it with and then use maya's default merge vertice tool

did you already try point snapping that specific vertex to it's target and merge both vertices using 'merge vertex'?
EDIT:
damn: i hate it when that happens! :annoyed:

Ya...just figured that out...however. . I'm also looking for a possible tool that would allow me to align 2 or more vertices together. I'm running into that problem quite a bit. Scale seems to work but I have to eye-ball their absolute zero. My teacher told me in 4.5 they allow you to say scale to local 0 or something. However, we're on 4.0.3 here at BCC.
Ya, I'm a SUPER NOOB when its comes to Maya...Max I got no prob with.
Any tutorials on modeling in Maya would be rad...mainly character models, I suck at searching for things...I either find reviews, unrelated items or the absolute lamest modeling tutorials. I figured out viewbackground so I can work off my sketches, I mainly go about modeling using the Paul Steed approach.
Thanks!

here's a pretty nice selection of maya tutorials:

hope this helps!

snap them by holding the v key
who cares about max here - there's no excuse for not finding the information you need - just read the manual - and there's a big sticky tutorial thread on the top - and there's highend3d.com

hehe.
Thanks for the help and links.

don't think you'll be able to 'target weld' in maya. just gonna have to deal with the extra steps til they update the poly tool sets.

nah, no need to wait, its probably mostly all there allready.
i wrote a script for this a while back, and updated it a squidge just now. its a tool context for snapWelding/Merging vertices. if you'd searched, you woulda found it .. ark well. its worth knowing how to search, btw, really! :)
_read the script header for details_
-esp. bit regarding what to edit out if your not using 4.5.

always good to see some one have a go at it. nice try and well appreciated, but like most of the work arounds to date, they really aren't as close to the original fully functional tool. add one more to the wish list.

gundog -
having not used max' target weld, i wasnt sure what it did exactly. so i dl gmax, and has a squiz (and at soft seln too - ahh huh! :) ). so w target welding you gotta drag a bunch of vert/s around onto a vert. righto, so you dont like spending extra time shift selecting individual members into a bunch, as was the case w my last script (was geared for one-to-one tho)? i decided to write another approach to it - multiSchnap! this one allows you to select as many verts as you want, and they'll snap into one, then to target. perhaps, maybe, possibly an even slightly quicker workflow than max' targetWeld now? (eek! :)) just select a bunch of verts together into a single welded vert, then explicitly select your final destinatn, no need to drag it about ... gives you an idea about how things will look as you congeal your initial bunch, rather than a dispersed floatila of pnts you woft over to a target (whose selectablity may need to be adjusted, depending on mesh density). this stupidly simple thing approaching the full functionality your looking for? (asked in fun jest!)
was interesting to have a look at max, have to have a bit more of a poke! always interesting to see different approaches.

WOW your Target Weld script is awesome.
Saves me SO much time and grief.
I don't even have to drag to the point I love it.
Max 5.0 should have THIS in their prog.
I'll try out the newer script when I get a chance.
Target Weld is DOPE!!
Thanks man.

hey wrend,
nice addition to the top poly scripts like the mjpolytools. glad people like you are out there making enhancing the modeling tools.
thanks
