I'm new to 3d max (from Maya), and I'm just trying to learn my way through the software for the time being. I've found that when I use the split plane tool, that it creates a bunch of extra verts in on my faces that I've split. I really hope that I'm just using the tool wrong, cause what a pain in the ass it is to go back and snap the verts everytime I split something.....sorry this is so primitive.

you should look into getting meshtools. Its a free collection of maxscripts which enhances the modeling tools. Some people perfer to use the built in tools, but meshtools is what I use...

It's a better tool for dividing edges, creating new segments, etc.

Look for it on scriptspot.com

thanks for the help Aaron. that script is pretty cool, but I didn't see a tool that acts like the split tool...a bunch of selection type stuff, and chamfer options. Am I missing it?

check out the buttons that light up with the edge level sub obj mode. the 2's and 3's will do plenty of splittin

with epoly, go into edge selection mode... select two opposing edges, and use the divide by edge tool (2,3, etc) that'll divide an edge and create new polys... u can also divide an edge in half, and connect verts to make new polys as well... play around with it more and you'll find it more and more useful i think.

let me know if u have specific q's about it

I tried running the meshtools script, but didn't seem to work. does it have it's own interface, or is it within max. Sorry....I tried finding some documentation on it, but had no luck.

"INSTALLATION (READ IT!):

1. run "Meshtools_2_x_removal.ms". This will (should) delete all previous
version Meshtools macroscripts from 3dsmax4/ui/macroscripts directory. (I
compiled now all scripts into 2 files, so they are easier to manage.)
2. copy "Meshtools-Functions.ms" to 3dsmax4/stdplugs/stdscripts (where
3dsmax4 is your max4 directory), overwriting the previous file
3. copy "Meshtools-Macroscripts.mcr" to 3dsmax4/ui/macroscripts
4. copy the new icon files (all .bmp s) to ui/icons and ui/discreet.
5. pray
6. Start max.
7. go to Customize/CustomizeUI
8. Everything should be under Category:Meshtools, as before."

btw that's meshtools 2.5

what version of MAX are u using? max 5 has most of the meshtool implimented (although not very well)

u can slice a plan a few ways, the slice tool is prolly the worst way!

if your using 5, ot 5.1, right click your mesh and choose convert to poly at the botom right of the qaud. now you will have "cut" tool under edge mode. That works pretty wel.. sometimes it won't let u cut exactly where u cant. in that case just cut as close as u can and move ur vert into place.

need more help? leme know

Using connect to split a poly or the new quickslice (max 5) or the cut tool.
- How are the new MAX 5 meshtools not implemented well? If you have hotkeys for edge ring, loop and connect it's fantastic! - the settings button is great with connect too!

thanks a lot guys....I've got it down now....I just set hot keys for a few tools. The problem that I was having, was that I was trying to do it in editable mesh mode....hehe, had to be in poly....thanks!
