Does anyone know if there is a training DVD/Video which shows you the basics of character animation?

Maybe a walkcycle, some dancing or something like that.....just to see the basic workflow of character animation and which editors you should use most and how.

AW's MAYA.TECHNIQUES.INTEGRATING.A.CREATURE.ANIMATION.RIG.WITHIN.A.PRODUCTION.PIPELINE

Maya Techniques | Integrating a Creature Animation Rig Within a Production
Pipeline will provide you with real world solutions to your production
challenges. Presented by Jason Schleifer, Animator/Creature Technical
Director at Weta Digital, this material was taped during a Siggraph 2001
MasterClass Seminar. While this DVD is not intended to provide all the
answers to building a complete animation rig, it will provide you with an
example on which to model your work. Advanced MEL knowledge is not
necessary for understanding all of the material presented in this DVD,
but is extremely beneficial for utilizing these concepts to their fullest
potential. Included with the DVD are approximately 80 pages of valuable
notes in PDF format, MEL scripts and many useful tips, tricks, and examples.

The product explores the following concepts:
· Rig integration into the pipeline
· Defining the "Creature"
· Animation Control Concepts
· Orienting joints
· Example Concepts
· Backs
· Automated Shoulder Control setup
· Procedural Puppet Methodology
· Upgrading puppets
· Building puppets procedurally

i guess you already knew that - maybe i am misunderstanding you

im not sure that they are any videos or Dvd on this subject specificaly but, for me the best resources you can get for great character animation is none other than the books that are based on traditional animation (2D) ...They rock!!!

my number one pick would be:

the illusion of life from disney

and than:

The animator's survival kit

also a good web link for traditional animation is:

http://www.awn.com/tooninstitute/ (www.awn.com/tooninstitute/)

or

www.multiliteracy.com/persist/index.html

anyway hope I helped you out!!!!

By the way if anybody else knows about a good book or a good dvd or something that's character animation based, please share? thanks

jack

Maby you could have a look at Animators Gym from Lost Pencil.
Have not seen it my self, but it looks like a good stuff.
They do not go indepth about Maya, but are concentration on the principals of animation.

Go to their webpage and read more about it:

There is a animation specific DVD being produced by Jeff Lew the creator of Killer Bean. I saw a little teaser for it and it looks interesting and worth checking out. Think it's gonna run around $40.
