I am new to animating, but what I think I did was set a key on one frame with the light off, then set another key in another frame with the light on, but it didn't work? How would I animate lights on/off?

You can't animate the on toggle because its not an animatable parameter... there are lots of tutorials on blinking lights...

What you can do is animate the multiplier parameter from 0 to 1 use a square curve so its either on or off.... no inbetween... or you could just set the previous frame to zero and the next one to 1.... that should turn your light on/off.....

hope that made some sense

Just be careful that you don't got into negative values. Negative multiplier will suck light out of a scene.

There's a good script on Nik Clark's site for animating lights with some preset effects. Check it out at : http://www.nikclark.com/scripts/spookylights/index.htm
