I'm just wondering how detailed the "city planet", Coruscant,
in episode 2 really is. In what resolution could it have been painted in?
And is it a sphere with a texture on it or is it a painting?

It's hard to say whether it was a painting or CG...

However, if it was CG, those texture maps would have to be absolutely gigantic - like 10000x10000 at least.

So that would be an exception you mean?
Or is that not the standard resolution when painting a texture?
My guess is about 2024 * 2024, true?

The size of texture maps is best decided according to the size that they will appear on screen. Since the Coruscant planet was shown up very close - ie zoomed in to parts, this means that the texture maps would have been gigantic, possibly around the proportions I mentioned - 10,000x10,000 pixels.

As I mentioned, you really have to decide on your image map size depending on how big any part of the texture will appear on screen, and how large that broadcast standard is - whether it's for TV or film or IMAX or whatever. :)

Couldn't the painters have added some detail in post production ? What I mean is, we're assuming that they just build the whole scenery, while they could do the same thing with different renders and paintings in layers. Know what I mean ?

Just like we used to design a stage for a play - different layers that'll create a sense of depth and scale.

I could imagine that they'd break down the town in different sections from front to back. Every section has less and less and less detail.

It's just a wild stab in the dark, but if you do it in 10, 12 layers, nobody will notice the difference when you have scenes like that chase. Besides, the oldest trick in the book is distraction, so 99% of the viewers won't even have looked at the backgrounds in the first place ;)

Anyone know if it's possible to layer (for example) 12 animations into one big one ? Sounds like a nice challenge btw :D

Many times film effects are rendered into separate passes (or layers), to allow flexibility in compositing. A lighting pass, a fog pass, a specularity pass, a diffuse pass, a reflection pass, a depth pass, etc. etc. etc. Then each can be tweaked to get the best result, to aid in continuity from shot to shot, and to change camera movement (add shake, change composition, etc.).

As for texture sizes, often some of the textures are procedural, while some are painted. Leigh is right about producing the right size textures for the scene requirements and display requirements.

I would have been glad if someone could give ME some advice on painting a good planetary texture. I have learned ALOT since I bought my Wacom, it's just that I've mostly been painting metallic textures (I like space :)) I use Photoshop, like most others.

One way is to look at real planet pictures...

The planet maps at JPL are flattened already, ideal for sphereical UVs.

Another way is to paint with Photoshop 7 brush dynamics (or similar), to get natural-looking variations in your brush strokes.

Zorbi on SciFi3D, who made QUITE a lovely Coruscant image himself, said this: I used a high-rez cloud map (10800x10800; originally 21000x210000 pixels) found on NASA ftp server.

I'd put a link to the pic, but it's buried in an awkward spot on the site. Go here (http://www.theforce.net/scifi3d/), hit the 'Star Wars' button at the top left, and then the black and yellow WIP thing at the very bottom of the frame on the left side... and then the bottom of several banners that pop up in the middle of the page, it'll say 'SF3D Trailer Select Picture' on it. Then scroll down till you see that lovely horizon. :cool:
