Hello all! I have been experiencing this problem for quite some time now and it's greatly hindering my progress. Whenever I try to use transparency maps in maya when modelling something like a hairstyle for a game character model, I can get it to work, but I get weird transparency issues...it only happens when one polygon passes in front of another in the field of view. This is hard for me to explain, so I'm providing some screenshots. When I render it with maya software, the problem disappears, but maya software can't handle normal maps! I have heard it might be my video card (geforce 6600), which I'm really hoping it isn't since I can't afford a new one. Has anyone else figured out a work around to this problem? I can't be the only geforce + maya user. I cannot get much further along with my portfolio if I can't model hair for any of my characters. Thanks so much for any help you might be able to provide :)

I am having transparency problems myself, I don't know if they are the same, but they sound similar. My hair renders out fine, but in the scene view, the texture is there but you can see through it when polygons pass by each other. This only seems to happen on objects that have been combined with other objects, if i place the map on a new object it's fine.

If you solve this problem please let me know

If you want to render a normal map try Js normal mapper

I can definately tell you its not your video card, i use the Geforce as well.

-Are you using a Blinn for your hair because your transparent portions will still pick up a specular highlight in the view port. if so just turn off your specular roll off and you should see it change.

thats all i can think of at the moment i'll let you know if i find something else. good luck.
