Hello to everyone here,
I am Kumar, currently working in the industry. Just some thoughts i wanted to ask and clear my doubts. Hope someone will be open enough to share some screats.

Ok when you composite a blue / green screen footage, into a background its really a lot of detailed work. http://forums.cgsociety.org/newthread.php?do=newthread&f=76# so big up to you all who have the time and the patience to do all that passes. I still wonder do you all still do all that passes when your dateline is shortened...??? Hmm Hehehe

I am working on Blue Screen / PAL / DVCPRO 50 / SD res type compositing.

Does resolution really play a big part ? Hmm guessing from color depth and sorts ok i know to one extent whats the answer. I mean the integration between your keyed FG and BG.

Ok i did the basic stuff, degrain, deblur, de interlace and then key.... bla bla bla.. Edge Blurs. Scaled FG over BG.... bla bla bla.

Analyse and correct the colors and so on. Match shadows and lumiance, using monochrome.

Ok now are there some advanced tips i should look into?? when i am matching the colors and shadows and highlights??

Sometimes i blur the composited Bg big and then multiply it over some elements if i am creating something like a matte painting type composite. Are there other stuff i should look into??

Ok how do you change the lighting on some of the elements, like if its shot with the wrong lighting... Man i had some late nights before i at least pulled off a just approval. What do you guys do for these situations???

Ok motion blurs, man this used to be a pain, but not after some curves adjustments and isolating and replacing the colors, its better i learnt something along the way. But is there any way to fix the motion blur problem altogether... I am guessing not, since the source has it. Or do you guys roto around it, and do some quick clone type masking to get the fingers looking normal again... Especially in a mid or close up shot??

Please do talk openly about how you grade and finish or polish the composite. I am looking for a tighter integration, anything along that line would help me much.

Cheers and thanks

Kumar

A couple tips.. Working in SD res from DVCPro is probably not going to be the best source. Anything higher res and progressive will be much better.

Regardless, when keying, the more passes at individual pieces of the comp, the better the integration. Motion blur is tricky, but you can solve it (usually) by pulling a lumakey or chromakey based on one of the color channels. I try not to alter the color curves too much on motionblurred elements, since a little will go a long way. Matching lighting can be tricky as well, but can be done on each of the ranges individually (shadows, midtones, highlights). If there is fluctuating light on the fg that you want to change, you could pull a luma key and cc through that matte. Again, it all depends on a)the footage, b)the resolution, and c)your time.

For most shots on Flags of our Fathers, we had no bluescreens or greenscreens. A lot of the keying was done based on luma and chroma. Lots of difference keys. I'll put up a visual breakdown up when the show is on DVD, but you can see a quick script breakdown here (http://www.vfxtalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6349). The big gray box on the left is a key for a foreground.

Hope that steers you in a decent direction.

Hi there Aruna,
Thanks for the advise. I still would like to know more about what you said regarding a luma or choma key for the motion blur? Do you mean key out the part you need to adjust then adjust its colors?

Yup the more passes the better the integration, any tips on how you go about matching something? Any visuals or technical advise in shake would be nice.

As for the res part, i guess i am stuck as thats the source i need to work with.

I will try to see if i can post something,,,....

Regards,

Kumar
