View Full Version : Infinity Spacecraft WIPs

Hi guys. Im doin some modeling work for a sci-fi MMORPG called Infinity (www.fl-tw.com (http://www.fl-tw.com/)). Hopefully I can do some texturing too, but I'll need some heavy training on that since I'm relatively new to 3d and havn't spent much time uv mapping or painting stuff in PS. Anyways heres a model I just started workin on. It's a luxury liner and can be from 20k to 40k tris. Right now its at 6-7k. I still need to beef up the back to accomodate atmospheric flight for simply for the laws of physics sake. I'd love if I could get some tips and hopefully tuts on good teqniques for mapping and painting textures.

As far as I can tell, this thing has no way to steer, aside from typical George Lucas "magic mechanics."

Um, thats why a spaceship has a bridge. What do you mean by steering? I'll post a wire when I get home.

hes getting technical and saying if this were a real ship it couldnt turn because everything is locked in place. Some thing needs to be able to rotate to shift the propultion in a differnt direction.

Maybe if they want to turn left, they just stop the engines on the left?

yeah I thought alternating thrusters is how stuff actually turned in space because of the no friction thing. could be totally off base though but it seems to make sense.

For every thruster there has to be another thruster pointing in the opposite direcetion to decelerate it. As far as te turning thing goes, I guess they're saying there is no thrusters on the side to turn the ship, and the thrusters that you do have don't look like it's able to articulate at a different angle. But even so, having thrusters on the sides of a battlecrusier along with the fuel consumption needed to maneuver is about as crazy being able to build a battlecruiser in real life. Even with articulated engine thrusters, it'll probabl take the ship several square lightyears to make a full 180 degree turn if its blasting away.

Lol ok. First off heres the wires. About the side thrusting, they will certainly be a method of turning, but even if 3d thrusters on the sides arnt added, centrifuges suffice or a texture can be added. I was probably going to add bow thrusters anyways. =) I'll try working on it a little.

Thrusters are not the only way to turn things in space. You can also use the torque from a flywheel to turn a ship. Which is actually a far better way for precision maneuvering, as once the flywheel stops, the ships rotation stops as well.
Compare, also, the maneuvering thrusters to the main engines on the space shuttle. The maneuvering thrusters are *much* smaller than the main engines, and are internalized, with only a small hole in the hull of ship. So its perfectly acceptable to simply paint them on as a black spot.
