i've looked half of this morning on how to model hair for my character. found a plugin called fur and hair for 400$, i'm a student not a well supported individual that can throw money away like that. looked for tutorials but of coarse when i type in "3ds max hair tutorial" i get a bunch of forum threads that mix all those terms up and nothing that really helps me

once i noticed on a website a person splined out about 7-9 splines from the head, and the rest of it was just filled in with the redish color the artist selected for the hair, i'm going through the eds max 7 bible currently but just if anybody has any special tequniques they go about this, please it would help, thanks in advance

Hey,

Max 8 has hair and fur built into it, however I'm not sure if that helps you or not. You could try checking www.scriptspot.com for some scripts that could help you. Other than that, you'll need to find some tutorials or wait for someone who's good with hair/fur to weigh in on this thread.

Good luck :D

I think it might be helpful if you told us if the hair has to be modelled or if it can actually be made from Hair or Fur. As gringer said max 8 has hair and fur built into it, so I take it you don't have max 8. How realistic does it have to be? Etc.

doesn't have to be too realistic, saw the hair and fur plugin for 400$, i'm just a student, modeling the hair for a game character, so not to bad, but i don't wanna have a doublesided plane extruding off of the head with an alpha texture, guess i'd actually like to have the hair be a little reactive ingame, makes me wish i had max 8 instead of 7 :( lol

If it makes you feel any better the Hair and Fur that comes with Max 8 is pretty awful - its so unfriendly and buggy that I've not been able to use it properly yet. So far I've had to resort to modelling the hair - if anyone has any good advice / tuts on modelling complex hair-styles then I'd be glad to hear about them!

To be honest it would be far cheaper for you to upgrade to max 9 with its new hair and fur improvements, i think its £90 for the student license. The presets and tutorials that ship with it give some great results allbeit far from perfect. If you are modelling for game then actually modelling the hair would be more appropriate unless you are modelling a game trailer???? where you can push the cinematic element of the game and poly count doesnt really matter. If you are restricted in terms of resources and your in game engine isnt capable of dynamic hair then modelling and texturing it with maps might be the way to go.

http://www.worley.com/TutFiles/StuTut/index.htm - a tutorial on modelling hair through splines

also on www.3dtotal.com under the complete projects section a guy models a character and uses hair and fur in max, he has some handy tips and tricks in there for using maps to define the places that the hair effects on the head.

theres hundreds more out there and the autodesk sight has demos under its features pages
