Alright, Ive just finished "basically" my first complete character, and im ready to texture him, But I cant get the uv coordinates right to save my own life, Ive tried multiple different mapping types for different parts of his head, palanar for the ears, cylindrical for the mid section of his head, and neck and a planar mapping for the top piece of his head, but no matter what I always end up with stretching in one area or another, I guess it all boils down to Inexperience,

Im also having a horrible time with the facial bump maps, it seems no matter what i do, the deatail (wrinkles etc..) turn out to be either a) way too sharp and obvious b) too smooth and unnoticable, and Im about to lose my mind...

So if anyone has any Tricks of the trade, basic tips, tutorials etc... on the creation of bump maps and also dealing with UV mapping in Maya ,(anything that might be helpfull), feel free to post them here and that would be great, cos I dont know what else to do...

hell, we could even make this a sticky topic, like the tutrrials and scripts threads....hehe:shame: :applause:

As far as getting good UVs, the best way is to do it by hand. You create the UVs using any combination of methods, but they won't be perfect unless you dive in and adjust them manually.

Getting perfect maps will take some time too (unless I'm doing things wrong). Start by taking screenshots of your model in the orthographic views. Load these into photoshop, and paint some maps to use with planar projection. Once the maps are ready, planar map them to the appropriate sections of the model. After a good deal of tweaking, you can then bake the textures to the UVs. Load the resulting images into photoshop, and combine them. If everything worked, you'll notice some areas are stretched and others are compressed. Once this new map is applied to the model, everything should look fine.

This page might be worth a look:

http://www.eliteops.com/sama/uv_tutorial/index.htm

I found it really usefull when I was starting out but it seens like you already know most of it.

Maybe post some pics of your model/maps and people might find it easier to be of assistance to you.

All the best. :)
