This is a presentation of the Curtiss P-40. I based in a short sequence of the film "Battle of Britain". I made the background with several images, the clouds were generate with Mayaīs particles and fluids and the P-40 was generate with 3DMax. I used Maya to texture the P-40, animation and render. To illuminate this scene I used a HDRI image and directional light. And I rendered with FinalRender to Maya. The postprocesing was generate in Combustion and with Sapphire plugin.
Special thanks to Fernando Román for the audio. Thanks!
I hope yoiu like it!
I recommended you show this video in Full-Screen with Sound.

i really like this piece....i know how difficult maya fluids can be...especially with regards to rendering and art direction.
I agree, id like to see more, and some more animation...
id also like to see more of the ground, so we have frame of reference for speed. Or you could achieve this be having some/more clouds fly by the lens...anything that is more stationary so we can see how fast they are moving.
Wow, man, good work.
Seems realistic, I like the compose that you have made. It's really cool.
The only thing that I don't like, but it's a detail, It's the animation of the second P-40 when stop near the first P-40 .
Anyway it's a good work, man. I like the "old documental" style.
Five Stars dude.

Iīm very very impressed!...WOW!
Iīve never seen somthing of your work!...I didnīt hope nothing like this!..what a sorprise! ;)
Great work Nen! Five stars for you and many patience for your next works...WE WANT MORE!!
This work is just great !
It has a cool cinematic feeling to it.
I agree with Duthctilt in that a couple of clouds passing quickly could improve the feeling of speed for this piece.
Great job.

Hey Rodri!!
I think is a very good piece...
...But, under my opinion, I think maybe, the film have to much noise, only maybe...but looks great!!...I like the animation of fighters and the background...good job.
Cheers!!

Hi guys!
Thanks for all your coments.
Koke - Dutchtilt: Itīs truth that more cloud near to the planes improve the feeling of speed but, I would see more of the backgruound and more depth.
Chewaka: Itīs another posibility and in my next proyects Iīll have on my mind.
Thanks for your critics, guys!

Good work Rodrigo, that's looking really nice! The P-40s look convincing as does the backdrop. Textures look great too.
I do agree with the comments that the clouds should be movng a bit, to suggest speed.
Also the aircraft are much too shiny now. WW2 paints were usually matt or semi-gloss at best. even gloss paints wear down to become very dull in a matter of weeks, under combat conditions.
The sound should be replaced, I think. The aircraft sound like Cessnas, not like mighty V12-powered warbirds. It makes a huge difference.
Some historic notes... the P-40 was made by Curtiss, not North American, so it's the Curtiss P-40 Warhawk.
The worst thing about your animation: it's too short!!! :bounce:
Please make more! ;)
Nice WIP section on your website, by the way. Very nice work Rodrigo!
PS. please post your work also on www.military-meshes.com/forums (http://www.military-meshes.com/forums)

overall nicely done, I think the second planes snaps into formation a bit to fast...but that's just me, I ain't flyin'...nice work.

Wow, that is really cool! I like the "washed out" look- it makes it look like old film.
I am working on an aircraft animation as well- how do you go about creating the ground in a scene like this? Use an aerial photograph as a texture?

Hi guys!
Thanks for all your comments and cristics... these are necessary to improved!!
Skyraider3D: You are in right... this is not a North American aircraft is a Curtiss... Iīm mistake. Too short!! ja,ja,ja... Thanks for all.
EmeZ: You are in right, too... The animation itīs not right but Iīm not animator :) I think itīs good if you donīt see more errors; but in my next work Iīll be careful with the animation. Thanks for all.
Katana2665: Maybe yes or maybe not... in my documantation a piece of "Battle of Britain" the snap of the planes itīs very fast. I tryed follow my documentation only this. Thanks for all.
Stormy151: The texture of the background I made with several photos of the skies and 360 skies, and several screenshots of the Goolge Earth... and then I composed all in Photoshop.
Thanks for all guys!

nice work! I think the comp is great, realistic, good job on the renders as well. I have to agree with emeZ tho, the first time I saw it I noticed the weight of that second plane was a bit unnatural, I didn't feel the power of the engine as it was rising... other than that, I think it's wicked. good luck.

Yes Rodri, I agree with chewaka in this aspect, the film must has much more noise and maybe you can probe to do the animation in BW or sepia color...
But the work is impressive , remind me a pearl harbor scenes. Iīm impatient to see the next proyect

Hi Rodri
That is a nice piece of work. I think the problem that people may have with the animation of the plane is a combination of two things. You are correct in that the way the planes flew in real life were with sharp anad pronounced manoeuvres, however, the final part of the animation where it flies into formation with the first P-40 is slightly off. This is accentuated a bit by the camera move. The camera is a 'hand-held' type of move and you pre-empt the move of the plane, that is to say, you move the camera ahead of the plane moving, anticipating where it is going to go. It is more realistic to allow the plane to move and then follow, as that is more likely to happen in real life. I guess the best thing is to watch a lot of footage, reference is key.
I have just completed a film about pilots attempting to break the sound barrier, and spent a good deal of time working on aerial sequences. I built a B-29, a Bell X1 and a P-80, and all digital environments. I am finishing up a site and will post a link as soon as I have it ready.
Well done, looks good.

Hi, guys!
nickryan: Thanks for your comments and critics! I think you are right, the camera itīs not perfect, the anticipation to the p-40 and follow it, itīs no correct. I must had let breath the animation, to made more realistic. In my next animation I must be careful. Thanks for your comments. Please when you finish your animation send me the link to my e-mail Iīll be greatful to you.
In few weeks I hope submit a new image composition with P-40.
Thanks for all, guys!
