View Full Version : WIP: Chess Set
pgp_protector 02-07-2003, 11:15 PM Thought I would try a Chess Set.
The King,Queen, & Knight havent been modled yet.
Just need some ideas on how to improve it.
Lit with 3 Lights 1 Behind the & one on each side.
Final pic will be with the player in play though.
I am mainly looking for ways to improve the textures, & would like to know how to make a good brass.

Not a bad start but myself I would make the pieces more circular and make the features sharper. What kind of look are you aiming for with textures; photoreal or otherwise?

I say this in the most humble but blunt way possible:
It's a chessboard... a very lofty looking one.
It's almost like the whole chrome sphere on a checkerboard floor render. They look cool... but they're painfully over done.
You should model some actual pawns, and some actual 2 armed, 2 legged knights.. then this would be a masterpiece, and not something you see everywhere.
Drop the NURBS and build some lo-poly chess pieces... now that would have my attention!
I hope this didn't sound too harsh... just tryin to crit

Yea the heads of the pawns and other pieces need to be shrunk. If your going for realism, try some hdri and set up a table or some sort to play the game on. If you are working from a real chess board and thats what the pieces look like, good work. If not, try and look at other chess pieces, it will help you greatly...

1) Dont worry about being harsh. How else will I improve :)
2) Updated the Rook & Queen

Looking better just keep on modeling and eventually this will be totally totally cool. just keep making your peices more and more detailed.

I think it is looking alot better. The only thing i have issues with the table, and this is because I am trained as an architect... There is no way it can stand. I Like the chuck missing from the edge... perhaps if you bring the reflection down, and make it look like it has been outside and weathered it could provide a nice contrast to the rest of the scene which is new and highly reflective.
All in all, looking much better:thumbsup:

better than ever. love the new textures dont look like the basic SLA anymore. the only crit i have is that maybe the peices are a little too dull they look kinda unpolished. but thats just my opinion. if they had a higher specular that would be so cool.
looks great dude

I love that you have used some extrudes on the models(from the last time I saw the pic). They look much better. The textures are a big improvement also. Well done. I especially like the felt on the bottom of them.

I don't like ur style of peices however... they seem kindal ike you started with a so many sided cylander and just extruded the faces in and out.. :S perhaps ditch the plated faces and go with more smooth shaped formed peices?

Definitely cool! How many polys on average does one of those pieces contain??
