Should we start some kind of Petition to send to Alias? Telling them to give the makers of Brazil a free copy of Maya so they can
make Brazil for Maya? The output is simply amazing.

What do you all think?

Brazil is adding a shading language called Orchid that will be renderman compliant in the future(brazil 2? donno). So you will be able to use Mayaman or MTOR to output to brazil then.

Also even if splutterfish is/does start working on a translator, it will be another 2 years before we see it as a shipping product.

Yes, there was some talk of having Brazil for Maya as a renderer plug-in when peeps complained about Maya's native renderer. I think A|W took note of it (my guess) and released a free version of Mental Ray 1.5. Does A|W still want to have Brazil as a renderer plug-in?....I think they've already answered that. My two cents.

I did some test renders when Brazil was being developed. I liked it, seriously...compared to what was available at the time for Max...Arnold was not available for purchase at the time, and no beta version available to the public...and they're the ones that created GI render craze for Max - then the hoopla began. Brazil was developed at the heels of Arnold but they took it further, adding more features. Cebas had LumaObject but it didn't make it into front page.

And then, I finally bought Maya and upgraded to version 4.5 cuz Mental Ray 1.5 was available for FREE. I said, hot dang.....git on some of dat. I've always liked Mental Ray when it was availble for Softimage...saw some beautiful renders come out of Cyan when they were doing Riven.

Brazil is $1200, Mental Ray 3.1 is $995. Tho, I'm not 100% sure on MR's price. Brazil has few more features, tho the final release prb has more...one being surface scatter, glow worm...(what the?..), etc. Mental Ray doesn't have these..although now they're working on version 3.3....they just might.

Final verdict: Mental Ray 1.5 is free and luv the results I get..I've not tested all of MR's capability...but the immediate results are pretty sweet. Brazil's $1200 price tag is keeping me away...and I hardly use Max diz dayz.

mental-ray can't do subsurface scattering ? well, you are definitely wrong on this one

how comes there are so many prejudices about mental-ray?

Like I said I haven't tested all of MR's capability...and didn't see it featured. If u have read through my post...I'm actually for Mental Ray.

OK, someone point where surface scatter is in 1.5. Or how to go about setting it up.

Thanks,
