View Full Version : Complex hair collision
JohnBellas 11-03-2006, 05:49 PM so i'm kind of a noob to maya hair, and i'm using it to rig a tassel so that it dangles from a character's forehead, and rests on some concave parts of his head... but, from what i see on these forums as well as maya help, the only way to set up collision with hair is to create an invisible hair "collision sphere" or cube. is this really the only way to invoke a collision with maya hair? are they really saying i can't make my geometry a collision object? i can't understand how anyone could use hair on their characters if this is the case. can i at least create more than one collision object?

Yes! you can just select the mesh and go to hair>make collide - its that simple. This does take a while to simulate though but it can often be the only solution. You can add several collide spheres, and most of the time even adding quite a few of these is still much faster than making the whole mesh collidable.

While you can use your rendering geometry as a collision object for the hair, it is often better to use a low rez mesh (that doesn't render) for the collisions. This will allow for faster calculations, as render geometry is usually much more dense than is needed for te simulations to yield the results you want.

thanks for the prompt response, guys, that did the trick. can't believe it was under my nose the whole time. though i must say, even after reducing the model, it is much slower than a sphere.
