design and model/texture a unique and bizzare weapon that would fit into the oddworld universe. this can be anything from the Live Ammo Style crossbow in Strangers Wrath to the Large Snoozer from Munch's Odysee.

Limits:
600 Triangles
1 512 x 512 Colour, Spec, and Diffuse map
i'm not positive about these as i'm not really a weapons model guy, so please lemm know if this is too much or not

- the weapons all use consumer products as the ammo. the idea is to get pounded by the product and "learn to love it", eventually making the victim product-addicted. why market the product only in ads, if you can literaly throw the product at the consumer. Blitzpacker, Lungbuster and Snuzi - from the Art of Oddworld the first Ten years

I like this idea a lot. Its too bad that site is down, I was hoping to get some good concept work off of that page. I should have some time to enter this as well.

Sweet.... I'm going to try and get in this. I like the references but I have never played the game.

I agree the 256 seems a bit low. I don't usually nitpick about these things but you did say you weren't sure. I'd like to see 800tris and a 512 texture.

Does a 256 x 256 texture mean only diffuse? Or are normal, alpha, spec, etc allowed?

the site still doesnt seem to work for me. Its not down, its just that none of the links work for different sections. Does anyone know of another similar site? And I agree on the low texture res - I was hoping maybe 512 diffuse, spec, and normal.

first post edited, texture is now 512 x 512, you can have a diffuse (that's colour in Max and seperate shadow layer in Maya) plus a spec. if you've got time for a normal map than know yourself out, but i don't think it'll really be fair to judge a normal mapped model against a regular one, so maybe do it as extra but don't expect anything for it?

ok here's my max version of the Blitz Packer exactly 600 tri, it's going to be a no frills job (time wont allow) :P I hope I'm not the only one going to submit a final entry that would be sick for such a cool mini

So, this was a flaming baseball ball cannon untill I found out that it was 600 tris not polies. And reducing to 600 tris would make it look not exacly as i want it to, so thats it.

You could've removed the back pack and added a clip like fuel canister in front of the handle.

You can use sprites insted of mesh for the baseballs. I see a lot that can be optimized there to fit within the limits and not change the design..

It has about 450 polies and 960 tris so far. Without any balls or anything extra. If you can point out some major places to kill some tris, be my guest. Taking into account that I despite the overusage of sprites ofcourse. ;)

I agree with the others, Mefix your piece could be optimized further :P even keeping the same design it could be pushed down to under 600 tri, my design would have been more like around 850 tri before optimization but I managed to get the same design and under the 600 limit

ScudzAlmighty could we get an extension until Monday possibly?

wow, so many replies/entries in one day that's awesome:thumbsup:
everything looks great so far, allthough Hanzo, i gotta say while thats a great Blitz Packer,the point of the comp, all of them really, isn't to just model an existing but to create an original, sorry

since it's so close to the deadline and it looks like nobody's got to texturing yet (myself included), i think maybe we can push it to saturday at midnight, so one extra day

Where are you from? Cause where I live I don't get to see all kinds of people running around shooting soda into peoples faces or launching gobstoppers into a crowd of screaming people and hacking up computers with large hatchets.

yoyoman: the point of Oddworld isn't necessarily that things are "odd" but simply that it is a fantastic and over-the-top mirror to our own reality. where in our world someone may say that a product is being shoved down their throats through marketing, in Oddworld things are a bit more literal.

Well I was going to have it fire sticks of bubblegum (hence the square barrel), but never really got around to that, mostly because I ran out of polies in the cylinder.

Hey Scudz... Well it is basically a pc strapped to someones back so I added a plexiglass window and you can see inside and see the vid card, memory, cables, etc. The 512x512 left me with low res on a lot of stuff so I tried to focus on the main pieces. I still want to work on this since I don't feel as if it's done. Too bad I missed the deadline. Ahh well.. Still glad I did it.

as far as i know they happen whenever someone with an idea starts one.
somebody suggested this idea in the last mgac and when i said it was a great idea somebody else told me to start it. i don't think there's anything official behind it.

Well pick a winner from the late joiners and make the winner choose the next mgac:)
plus its not nice to let a starter that won last time win again because there are no other finished contestants.

wow.... really? it's not nice? so who's supposed to win? one of the five guys that said "Hey this is a great idea!" and then didn't enter? or the people that asked for an extension and still didn't finish? i don't mean any disrespect towards them, i'm sure they tried and many of the posted W.I.P's were promising but i'm not going to belittle the effort they did put in by announceing that the winner is someone who joined after the contest was already over. both of the late entries are excellent, and i applaud them for submitting anyway, but it would be a lot less nice to the other entrants to make one of them the winner.

also, i am FULLY aware that the person who starts the thread(me) and decides(also me) the winnner, shouldn't get to win(yep, me again). But this is a contest, and if there's only one submission, that's the winner. meaning if ANYBODY ELSE had finished, they would have won.

as far as the next comp goes, i didn't mean to say that i was told " you get to run the next one" just that if i wanted to i could. so if you want to, go ahead. in fact i order you to start the next MGAC. make it about alternate helmets/hats for players in Fable, with a poly count of 256 and a single colour map of 64x64.

Based on what i can see about Oddworlds weapons they are typically "goofy" but nicely modeled and textured.

- a gun that shoots cigarettes.
- a gun that shoots soda cans
- guns that shoot sleeping pills/needles

those seem to be the basis for the concepts. if i participate i will take these ideas into account.

RekO, i'd love to see a submission, in fact i'd love to just keep this thread going forever as some kinda tribute to Oddworld at least. but remember, the three guns posted at the beginning are just some examples of the types of weapons that can be found in the oddworld games. there's planty of standard machine-gun type weapons, and Stranger used a crossbow that fired living animals, so you don't need to be limited to mass-murder-marketing.
