View Full Version : speedup tips
ivo D 02-07-2003, 11:14 AM when in edit mesh/edit poly..
you often have to have a selection of a lot of edges or polys to pool..
aint there some kindah lasso tool to select them..or something else
automaticly selecting the whole x/y row or something..caus it takes freaking a lot of time..when you count together all the times you have to do that when modeling.. selecting edge by edge

Yes there is a lasso and many selection tools... I remember I have seen something that if you select an edgeloop you could transform the selection to vetex selection, maybe it was meshtools, you should check it out, many cool features.
Howdy !
There is a lasso indeed, and many selection tools, but it depends on what version of Max you're using..
Max5 has the most tools, with edgeloops and edgering : select an edge and you can either select all edges in a "loop" or all edges in a "ring" (see pic), then you can convert your selection from one subobject mode to another, keeping your selection as is in the subobject mode you're converting from (got that ? i mean that you can always come back and still have your edges selected for example), and whatsmore you can grow/shrink your selections...
Let's not forget that you can also ignore backfaces in your selection, and define named selection sets of any subobject...

is this edgeloop thing and so on in max 5..or just in meshtools..and where..?
i use edit mesh the most..
thought edit mesh was better than edit poly..or am i wrong?
Max 5 has them already, if you're using a previous version you'll have to get the Meshtools.
well i don't want to say something wrong here but i do think that these tools mostly work on Editable Polys... and not on Editable Mesh... well that would be for Max5, i don't quite remember about Meshtools in Max4.
anyway, using Editable Poly rather than Mesh is no big deal i guess : )

oke thanks for the info.. well i use max 5 so.. thats no prob:)
but damn edit poly..blaah they suck hehehe
why so ?
i've been using editpoly for a while, and apart from these selection tools that are quite usefull (to say the less), there is also nurms subd that's quite handy, you can display tris to model in low poly...
i'd say editpoly rocks !! :airguitar :buttrock:
my 2cents anyway : )

Is there some script that can select like lightwave can, move mouse over polygons or vartex.
@Namroth: other than lasso tools i don't know
@Ivo D: under "Subdivision Surface" rollout in EditPoly, first check box reads "Use NURMS Subdivision", and right under it spinners enables you to define display and render iterations...
