hey all

im about to purchase the DELL PRECISION M50 laptop which includes an NVIDIA quadro 4 500 GoGL with 512 mb ram (DDR).

is this a good setup for running maya, i know its certified by alias/wavefront but the overall performance is a concern. i also intend to play games on this machine. can this card handle all of the latest and greatest games?

specs.

intel p4 1.8
400 mhz processor system bus. (is this bus speed good?)
512 mb ddr
40 gig hdd
quadro v/card

thanks heaps for any comments / advice..

ps: the other option is a 2.4 intel p4 with 1 gig ram, 30 gig hdd and a radeon 9000 video card with 64 meg ram for around the same price. which way should i go?

cool, sounds great but i have an extremely tight budget and this is all i can afford for some time. how does the 550 run?

well... the dell m50 is starting, $2,800... and sits right around $3000 with 512 ram, and a Dell UltraSharp display...

spensive bugger.... but even the Alias|Wavefront Execs use the Dell M50's....

i'm guessing there may be a liquidation... or at least a sale of the M50's... once Dell starts installing the Quadro Go 700's....

they will probably call it the Dell M60's....

... sooo... i would say hold out for a better deal for the M50.. if you want..

save up for the M60?

or just go buy the M50 now, it sounds like it will be a monster of a video card

Have you checked the processor upgrade options? I recently just purchased some laptops for some employees at work, and the price differences between a 1.8 and a 2.2 was less then 100 USD...something definitely worth the extra $$$.
