View Full Version : Shrek 4 Coming to Theaters in 2010
RobertoOrtiz 11-01-2006, 01:08 PM DreamWorks Animation reported its earnings for the third quarter of 2006 on Tuesday and revealed that Shrek 4 will hit theaters in 2010. Also, the Puss in Boots movie, previously expected to go straight to DVD, will instead be a theatrical release sometime after Shrek 4.

Shrek 2 is their film with the most solid story and in my humble opinion also one of the most entertaining animated features ever made. If they keep top people working on the franchise then I'm all for it! Yay Shrek!!

Yay Shrek!!I like Shrek as well, it was actually the first CG animated film that I watched in the cinema and it was one of the more memorable movie going experience I've had so I'll always have a soft spot for Shrek. :D
Why do people only complain about Dreamworks milking their franchise when Pixar also have done a Toy Story sequel and maybe another one?

Pixar only did a Toy Story sequel because Disney forced them to. Then after their split with Disney, for leverage, Disney greenlit a further Toy Story sequel with a separate studio. When Disney bought Pixar, part of the deal was the cancelling of that film. Apparently it's a go again, but only because Lasseter actually wants to do it.

Why do people only complain about Dreamworks milking their franchise when Pixar also have done a Toy Story sequel and maybe another one?
Because there aren't a huge amount of Shrek fans on these forums. Plus there's a difference between milking a franchise and making a sequel. We'll have to wait and see the quality of Shrek 3.
Pixar only did a Toy Story sequel because Disney forced them to. Then after their split with Disney, for leverage, Disney greenlit a further Toy Story sequel with a separate studio. When Disney bought Pixar, part of the deal was the cancelling of that film. Apparently it's a go again, but only because Lasseter actually wants to do it.Oh? I thought their initial dispute with Disney was because Disney wouldn't count the sequel as part of the 7 or so movies deal they had. I find it hard to believe that Disney could force Pixar into making a sequel then renege on the deal and not get sued.
And if they're going to make another sequel on their own free will, wouldn't their position be the same as Dreamworks when it comes to franchise?

Here's the difference:
Pixar: "Hey, Toy Story was well-received, people liked Toy Story 2, and we actually are interested in Toy Story 3, let's make it."
Dreamworks: "Shrek was a hit, Shrek 2 didn't bomb, so let's make Shrek 3! And before Shrek 3 is even finished, let's set a release year for Shrek 4, and announce the Puss in Boots spin-off!"
That this announcement came in the same breath as an earnings report is particularly telling, I think.
I would bet that part of this franchise milking is because Dreamworks knows that, unlike the Pixar flicks, the Shrek series isn't timeless. It's full of pop culture references that may cease to be funny, relevant, or even understood in another 10 years. They have to strike while the iron is hot because the flicks don't have the same staying power that Pixar's do.

lol at all the Pixar fanboys that consider themselves to be 3D artists when they didn't know that they have planned to go up to four with Shrek and then a Puss in Boots spin off since halfway through production on Shrek 2 even though the average joe on the street knows it. :D
HEy I wouldn't mind another Shrek or 10, what's wrong with making a trilogy of a great character.
Look how many Godzilla, James Bond, etc movies made. SHrek is a character that could have his own series, why not a series of movies.
We watch series all the time, so why differant in movie format?

That a release date for Shrek 4 has been set while Shrek three seems to be out of the news, I suspect Mel Brooks might be attached to it, somehow.

And before Shrek 3 is even finished, let's set a release year for Shrek 4, and announce the Puss in Boots spin-off!"Take a closer look at what you wrote, "well received" and "liked" sounds pretty similar to "a hit" and "didn't bomb" and what the heck does that "we actually are interested in Toy Story 3, let's make it" suppose to mean?

The difference is both Toy Story movies were universally well reviewed, as well as being big hits. The Shrek movies were even bigger hits, but they don't get the same level of critical acclaim. The perception is that Dreamworks look at how much money they made and they figure they'd be crazy not to make another sequel, whereas John Lasseter, director of both Toy Story movies reckons he has a good idea for a sequel, and since there's clearly an audience out there, why not make it.
Of course the motives are really secondary to the results. If they can make more Shrek movies, and keep the quality up, then more power to them. I didn't care for the first Shrek movie, but it made up for the money they'd lost with their 2d films, and kept them in business. Personally I don't care for either film franchise and won't be looking forward to the resulting movies... but if betting on a sure thing allows them to take risks with some of their other films, then I'm all for it.

Well as to the Toy Story 2 sequal, it was all the ideas (such as kids growing up, toys breaking) they thought of during the production of the first one but had to push them off to keep toy story 1 focused. It was not for the sake of Hey we made a hit so lets make another. I suspect it had always been in the plan. And I have to say it did kind of strike me odd to hear about a production of shrek 4 when shrek three is still set to be released. But I do have hope that the stories will be good. I love shrek 1 and the more I watch shrek 2 the more I love it lol.

The more the merrier......everything else they've done besides Shrek has tanked....so why in heck would they not continue that franchise. They're not morons people.
I know I know it's just so much fun to poo poo movies, especially sequels and remakes, but as soon as you get your noses out of the air, you will see the bigger picture.......making money and keeping people's jobs.

You make a good point here.
and what the heck does that "we actually are interested in Toy Story 3, let's make it" suppose to mean?
It's supposed to mean that for some time, Disney was planning to make a Toy Story 3 and Pixar didn't want to; it's supposed to mean that Pixar cancelled Toy Story 3 when they came back into the Disney fold; and it's supposed to mean that Pixar has decided that TS3 is a story worth telling, which interests them, and not just a money grab at a hot property, which does not.
Making movies is a BUSINESS. It isnt about artistic integrity-its about making money. Shrek 1 and 2 were massive hits, and 3 will possibly continue the trend. The Puss In Boots movie will more than likely also do well, because he is an amazing character. Why wouldnt they create sequels of one of the finer franchises and casts to come about in recent years?
Not to mention that fact that more movies means more work out there for animators.
I loved the first Shrek movies, and will go and see Shrek 3 when it comes out. I will also gladly go and see the PIB movie, aswell as Shrek 4.
I bet if PIXAR decided to create an Incredibles sequel, that thread would be full of "OMG PIXAR IS TEH BESTEST LOLZ!!" fanboy posts. Heaven forbid anyone else does the same.

"Shrek2 didn't bomb." Its the 3rd highest grossing movie of ALL TIME! Highest crossing comedy and (any) animated Movie of ALL TIME! Hello! Titanic is the No. 1 in this list I am talking about.

Shrek is timeless with a honest lesson. Just cuz you hate the pop culture reference doesn't mean it will not be timeless.
Classic music or even a theatrical release does not make a cartoon timeless. Bugs Bunny and Tom&Jerry are saturated with timestamped pieces and they are as timeless as ever. Some people are actually interested in seeing the characters on screen again, just like Toy Story's buzz and Woody. Bug's Life..not so much so. Shark's Tale... not really. Like all mediums, some characters you really fall in love with.

Heh, another Pixar vs. Dreamworks thread.
My take: I think we can all agree that Pixar and Dreamworks approach to making movies is different. Rather than try to quantify it, can't we all just agree that their respective approaches have each worked for them in the past and hope it continues to bring them success in the future.
Now move along... nothing to see here... :wise:

lol some funny stuff in this thread. I think that dude was being sarcastic though when he said it "didn't bomb." Like saying that Jessica Alba is "not unattractive."
In my opinion, the movie going public needs to be more easy going. I don't know if we've entered a new era where it's just the cool thing to do to rag on movies, or if it's always been that way and we just hear about it more because of this public forum called the internet. I grew up in the 80s and my friends and I never bitched about movies, even the ones we didn't really like. It was just something to do, no big deal. Today it's like people expect everything they see to be the GREATEST MOVIE they've ever seen. It's just entertainment, pure escapism from regular life.
I never loved James Bond, but I still watched most of the movies. Actually, I'm quite looking forward to the new one as Daniel Craig looks like he really owns the role in the previews I've seen. He just oozes cool. I didn't like Shrek at all--in fact, I can't even fathom what the big deal is and how it made so much money--but that didn't stop me from going to see the second and third ones, and I never complained about the movies. I'm glad there are lots of people out there who really like them. And if it means that Dreamworks Animation doesn't collapse, and lots of exceptionally talented artists and programmers make big bucks from them, then I'm certainly all for that!
Lots of people seem to hate sequels just on principle, figuring it's just a cash grab, but I don't have a problem with them. As long as there are people who love the characters, then they should make more. Why not? I mean, I've been waiting so many years to see Harrison Ford don the fedora and whip again, I'm just about ready to pop!!

Skurge gets the prize. Although it was more understatement than sarcasm.

I think the difference comes in a few ways. Number one, yes, the internet makes people bitch about everything.
People today are also more jaded. Everyone knows what "CGI" is and bandies the term about like crazy. There are also a lot more people who dabble in low-budget filmmaking. The magicians have revealed all their secrets, and some of the mystique of movies is gone. It's something everyone can do now.
Also, these days, people have so much potential entertainment competing for their attention that things have to be "special" sometimes.
And if it means that Dreamworks Animation doesn't collapse, and lots of exceptionally talented artists and programmers make big bucks from them, then I'm certainly all for that!
You make it sound like those of us who would like to see more storytelling quality in movies want everyone to lose their jobs. I don't see why those two things have to be mutually exclusive.
Lots of people seem to hate sequels just on principle, figuring it's just a cash grab, but I don't have a problem with them. I mean, I've been waiting so many years to see Harrison Ford don the fedora and whip again, I'm just about ready to pop!!
I don't have a problem with sequels as a rule. Actually, like others, I like the idea of revisiting characters a little down the road and having a new adventure with them. But I prefer them when they are motivated by "Hey, we have more stories to tell with these characters" rather than "Hey, these characters were a hit, let's figure out an excuse to put them onscreen again."
It's a subtle distinction, perhaps, but I feel an important one.
And I'm hardly a "hater". I liked Shrek 1, Shrek 2 was decent (no understatement this time, just a statement), and I'm sure I'll see Shrek 3. Depending on how Shrek 3 turns out, I may or may not see 4 and PIB in theatres. For all I know at this point it could be the best movie I've ever seen. But the initial signs of the continued Shrek franchise point to a primary focus on quantity.

Any word on what Shrek 4 will be about?
The whole idea of fairy tale satire, and realistic situations and reactions coming from fantastical characters we've known from bedtime stories is clever in my opinion, and holds plenty of room for great stories. I have to say personally I didn't like Shrek 2. But I like the world and characters, so maybe the next 2 Shreks' stories will hit the right chord for me.

Huh, how about that. My mistake. I guess it's because, to me at least, those movies just aren't very distinct from each other, they all kinda blur together, making me think I saw more than I actually did. Ah well, maybe I'll like the third one better. I'm an optimist at heart.

Argh, Michael, you seem like a great guy so don't take offense to this, but please don't put words in my mouth and say I'm implying things I absolutely didn't, that's a huge pet peeve of mine. All I meant was literally what I wrote, that I'm glad they're making a living doing what they love. No more no less. More jobs is a good thing in this relatively small industry.
And I am one of those people who would like to see more storytelling quality in movies, I just don't expect it every single time. It's impossible. Not every story will be great or will appeal to everyone. Even great writers will fail. But I have much more respect for people who try and fail than those who are afraid to try at all.
I don't have a problem with sequels as a rule. Actually, like others, I like the idea of revisiting characters a little down the road and having a new adventure with them. I completely agree, at least with the principal of what you're saying. But I think in reality, there is no distinction between the two. How do you know there are more stories to tell until you start trying to tell them? It's a chicken and the egg thing. I've done enough writing as a hobby--and reading about writing--to know this is true. Every prolific writer I've read about says there are always more stories to tell, as long as they like the character. I remember writing a story that I thought was pretty good, and I liked the character so I decided to write another one. When I started, I didn't have a story to tell per se, but ended up writing one that was better than the first. I thought, great, I'm going to continue the second one, so I already had a story in mind for the third. It turned out awful, just fell apart.

i would not mind watching animated movies at all......if thats a shrek or monsters inc. .....its a lot better than the so called movies (u know where humans act)......and it presents an opportunity for poeple like us to work...learn (their mistakes and good things)....and its always have carried a good message "even if its light" .......much better than the "movies"......animation is the word.....anyone can watch it and have a good time and not worry about the money part they yhave spend for the movie......see , very low animation movies goes as grand scale "crap" but most of the "movies" goes as good for nothing.....plus the CRAP actors and their stupid interviewes .....animators dont do these stuffs.......:), and animation is concidered as a collective effort but "movies" hardly follow that.....you can see the glimpse of a good world in most of the animations.....but what about "movies".....crap.......
i dont mean to say that i hate "movies"....i like it....but just that i like animated ones tooo and dont mind is its a pixar one or not, or if its a seq that portrays my fav character....just as long as it carries some meaning or its pure run to watch.....which i believe mostly all animated movies are.....and most of it.....:phew:
