View Full Version : Error Message importing skin weights
Narratorway 11-01-2006, 06:42 AM Okay I skinned a character before realizing I needed to add more bones. So I exported all the skin weights, added the bones and tried to import the weights again, but when I did it said no skins were selected.
This is not my area of expertise and opening the script editor revealed nothing. Any idea what's going on?

Oh snap! Forgot about that. I even told myself to pop that info in while I was making the post.
The rig's setup in Maya 7.01.

Don't mean to hassle, but I kinda need to have this issue resolved quickly. I pretty much can't continue with my work until it's solved. Does ANYONE have any ideas what I can do to fix it?

I thought I had, but I guess I didn't. Okay, my bad.
Unfortunately a new problem arises. While it seems to import the weights successfully, when I check, the weight properties are unchanged from the default smooth skin settings. It doesn't give me any error messages, but it doesn't import my skin wieghts either.

hmm now its starting to sound like the weights didn't export correctly the first time? not sure what’s going on here though I don’t have much experience with the import export weights. I've had success with the copy weights tool though. The rig was skinned to a reference file, and when we found out there was issues with skinning references, I duplicated the geometry. I took that duplicated geometry and skinned it to the same bones, now two geo's were skinned to the same joints. Then, I copied the skin weights over from one geo to the other and unbound the first one. Worked fine and picked up the same exact weighting, but since you've added joints, it may not work.
