okay I have a problem texturing a spirl on a sphere. I used the bhodinut spiral to create the 2 color spirl and did a flat projection on the sphere to get it to look correct. However doing this makes the spirls' line change width on the sphere do to the projection type. However do I get around this to work ? I've been trying to get this to work properly, but am stumped. Any adivice would indeed be appreciated.

Post an image of what you're referring to, please

The large spheres is what I got and the smaller images on the lower left is what I am going for. I don't have a side view, but I do have a 3 qaurter one which should help.

The problem is the spherical mapping on the sphere causing distortion.

I don't know if this will help but it is a great tutorial anyway! It is using Boris Sphere in After Effects but it shows you how to create a seamless texture for spiralling round a sphere.

worth a look

The URL would be quite useful.

This looks like a simple planer projection. To be clear: The spiral is a 2D image that is being projected straight through the sphere (as it should).

I say this because the image you posted shows a side view of the spiral. I can clearly see that it is stretching. Look at the way the spiral meets up with itself at the center.

Good luck!

Tim - I found that link useful for a little project I'm doing! Thanks! :)

Just use flat mapping. It'll give you exactly the result you posted above.

Adam,

Ooops! Yes . . I meant flat! I was having an Alias|Wavefront flash back. :surprised

Try Shrink Wrapping. As long as you only need to see one pole of the sphere, you should be fine. It will pinch the texture at the other pole, but should look good on the rest of the sphere.

1st of all I wanted to thank you all VERY much for all the help and input it has been extremely helpful and patient. I've tried every suggestion and haven't gotten the silver bullet yet to kill this beast, but am definitely closer. Now I have gotten some interesting results, but the closest to perfection I've gotten is by using the procedural spirl texture, but just lower the global scale down to 50 and shrink wrap as the projection map.

Now this takes care of the issue of the sprial changing width like in the previous image, but as is present in the bottom and front views some (for lack of a better term) ghosting appears which stops me from gasping relief. Please CG sages help me?! The only idea I have is maybe going into bodypaint and paint over the problem areas some how, but think it might not be neccessary? Any advice?
