View Full Version : Polygon Budget - New to c4d modelling
Hi there,
Im kinda new to c4d and im wondering if anyone can tell me if c4d has a polygon budget counter built into it. I know the structure info window shows some information but i can't see any budget tool to use with it.

Can you explain a bit more what you mean by a polygon budget tool?
Beside the Structure Manager in R10 you have to option to show selection and structure info in the AM, just select it from the Window menu. Is this what you are looking for?

Hey
In addition to the AM you can adjust the HUD to show the polycount directly in the viewport while you are working in polygon mode (i am pretty sure Björn knwos about that ;-))
Chris
wow thanks for the quick responses fellas,
Sorry srek i should of explained myself a little better, a friend of mine (who uses studio max) mentioned he has a polygon budget tool to use (whether this is a plugin or not i don't know i shall have to ask him), i just wondered if c4d had a simular tool.
Thanks for the advice both of you i shall play around.
Edit: Ohh i forgot to mention im using r9 also, not sure if that makes a difference to functionality, but im sure you r10 users will tell me it does :p
In the Object Manager menu click on 'Object>Object Information' to see how many polys the selected object has. I don't know what a budget tool is, but together with 'triangulate selected', these are the tools I use for poly budget management with regards to exporting into a realtime engine. Add these icons to your interface or HUD as already suggested.

It might do, you haven't told us what a poly budget tool does yet. Do you mean you enter your budget, then the 3d app tells you how many youre still allowed to use? Seems unimportant if thats it, if I know my poly budget is 5000 and the scene info tab tells me I have 4000 in the scene, I know ive got 1000 left to play with.

Of course that's a simple example. What if you have 2973 polys then how many you got left? You'd have to practically be a math genius!

Yeah, that's basically what it does... it's been in Max since R2.5 or 3... you tell it your limit, and it shows a little bar (as well as a total/current poly count) and goes into the Red when you're nearing your limit, etc.

Well, no C4D doesn't have that functionality built-in. Mash's "method" is pretty much the way it is ;) However, it could easily be made into a plugin that could mimic that functionality. Please post some screenshots and when I get some free time maybe I'll make the plugin and put it up somewhere...

I think with a built in OS calculator and the object info that R9 and R10 give, you could very well keep a good eye on your polygon "budget".
Maybe this is something that could be easily done in Expresso?

I wrote a little Xpresso-Xpression that will show the remaining amount of polygons in the object-name. Furthermore it will change the color of the object, when the maximum amount polygons is reached. Maybe you can use it. It's actually a very simple setup.

Edit To Add:
The maximum amount of polygons is fed into the first port of the "Math: Subtract" node.
The object is here named "2" (I had two polygons left.)
The constant holds the information about the maximum amount of polygons. This could actually be used to feed the first port of the Math node.
And the compare node actually uses the >= function.
Hope this helps.
Edit to add:
Use the data type "real". I don't think it will make any difference but just in case there is some issue with the other data types.

Thanks, fretshredder. But it was nothing special. Everyone could have done it. I was just the first to make a screenshot and upload it.

Yeah, I couldn't have done that. Xpresso still frightens me a little. :D
Awesome response fellas thanks.

That looks very good my friend, i shall try and sample that later and paste some screenshots if i can get it working (new to c4d and xpresso :s).
Thanks again chief :)

Actually from my limited experience with max I don't think that it tells you how many polygons are left on your budget. It just tells you how many polys the selected object's got and how many there are in total in your scene.
The "budget" field ist just there because there is a statusbar going from green to red and you can scale that statusbar with the input of the budget field.
Oh, found an image - "Poly Budget" in Max is really a quite useless feature. :p It doesn't do anything else that Cinemas built in polycounter.
I made the Expresso from BCEmke a little bit more comportable.

Thanks, Peter. I'll have a look at it. Because "more comfortable" is always good.
Danke.:)
