Hey guys,

Please see attached image. I made it to highlight the problems ive been having with refelctions. The pins/columns to the right of the image, are dark grey, and yet their reflections in the ceiling are much lighter. Has anyone any idea why this is?

Basically, dark columns, bright reflections. Looks wrong, help needed...

Thanks

umm havent used vray much but I suspect the bottom surface would show more black cause of falloff settings.

It's because of the background colout being black. The columns appear darker because they are reflecting the black background into the camera. The reflections of the columns are lighter because you see them first off the ceiling... then onto the columns and the final bounce is from the floor. So they don't reflect the background.

If you don't get that just change your background to green/blue/red (whatever) and render again and you will see what I mean.

If you are planning on montaging this into a site photo. Change the background image to a photo of the site. It doesnt have to line up... you only want similar colours. Then save the image as a .tif with alpha channels... extract the background and montage it back into the site. This way your geometry will have close to actual reflections.

[edt] okay that may be wrong... lol. I just had another look at the image. It seems like your columns don't have any reflections. And thats your problem... There is to much shadow being created from the GI and not enough light bouncing back into the camera off the columns. Change your background and add reflection to your columns (but not much) that should help out) from there on it its really just tweaking :) Hope that helped

I will have a look at this tonight, and i'll get back to you. I think it sounds like the first piece of advice is more relavent, though adding an emmiter/reflection layer to the columns may also help.

Perhaps i should render with a white background and change the background colour to black in Photoshop.

Do you need to save the image as a tiff to access the alpha channel in photoshop? Ive tried saving the rendering as a jpeg, then also saving the alpha channel as a jpeg. But it seems silly.

tiff will work fine. You will then have accsess to the alpha in the channel pane in photoshop.

I turned off the background and the columns/ reflections problem worked fine.

However i cant save files as tiffs. I can only save them as jpegs, hdrs, and two others i cant remember. Tiffs dont seem to be an option. It doesnt appear in the drop-down list of formats in the VFB.
