I am attempting to model a toothbrush with relatively high detail for my thesis but am having trouble with bristles. As it stands now I have just a ridiculous amount of cylinders which has obviously made my poly count unnecessarily high. I'm sure there is a better way to represent bristles in Maya, does anyone have suggestions?
Thanks!

Fur.
If not, mapped geometry. The strands are grouped in a cylindrical fashion. I don't see the point modeling every strand. I think you can get good results with it...

I propose Fur, if you have to do it at very high resolution.

Are you speaking fur in terms of Maya Unlimited? If so our school only has one license for unlimited unfortunately so this wouldn't be an option. I was thinking for now of creating a transparency map on some cone shaped tubes in order to possibly create the illusion of bristles. We'll see how that works.

there goes out fur...
Well, then you have the other option: geometry. As I said, don't bother to model all the strands. You will need only 16-20 cylinders or so.
Anisotropic highlights and some bump for the shader. It will do the trick. Can-t show pictures now...but go with geometry.
