I was wondering how i would go about creating stars and a moon other than painting it. is painting it the best way, or, is there another way to create a night sky.

i also want to add some fog in the atmosphere of the acutal shot. not painting, but actual fog. is there a way to do this, or do i composite this in?

I guess I don't understand why you wouldn't want to use a painted starfield. Its simple, effective and renders fast...

As for the moon, well if its critical thats its modeled, then make a sphere and apply a moon texture to it and position it accordingly.. But frankly, I doubt you'd notice the difference if it was just painted on your starfield..

paintfx makes great fog, but if you want it to be more complicated, use particles and a volumetric shader on them....

Okay,

I say the best way to do this would be to make a semisphere and add a leather texture to it. you can easily adjust this to make a nice star texture to your semisphere.

Model a sphere and apply a moon texture to it and position it.

For fog, (I'm not looking at the application right now because I'm at work) go to the camera attributes and somewhere in there you can add a fog effect.

Do you have fluids ?? you could make GREAT fog with a 3D fluid container and because you don't need much resolution it should render pretty quick.
