hi,
I have a problem rendering layer passes like diffuse, spec, shadow all seperately... not only that but i also cant save it out to a tga properly. Here are examples of what im getting...

1st image is the rendered image with the sss shader on it in mental ray...
http://www.tomkurylo.com/problem/1_main.jpg

2nd image is the alpha channel for some reason where it is only picking up on the lambert eyes... and doesnt add the sss to the alpha :/
http://www.tomkurylo.com/problem/1alpha.jpg

3rd image is an actual batch rendered render pass... for the shadow pass... its alpha is comepletely black...
http://www.tomkurylo.com/problem/1_shadow.jpg

the spec pass looks like the 1st image and has the same alpha as the 2nd image... same for the diffuse pass

any idea how to make the render layer passes work with this? Im using maya 7 and mental ray.

or does anyone know of another sub surface shader i can use?

Hi Tom, it seams Maya don't understand properly the SSS shader in passes. So I suggest you to use some other shaders for passes. Geometry Matte preset works (you can use it to make your alpha channel). Use lambert with white color for shadows, and put your diffuse weight, Front and back SSS weight to 0, to have your specular pass.
I hope this will help you.

that still doesnt give me a diffuse pass with the nice red glow in the ear and stuff.... ill try another skin shader if i can find one... any suggestions?

to get a propper alpha you have to check custom entities - pass custon alpha in the render globals...

for the diffuse pass... turn all specular off
for the specular pass... make overall, diffuse black.. turn all sss off (add in comp)

hope that helps

well... still i dont want to mess with all that stuff...

i tried dt3d skin shader.. can run in maya software and everything.. and looks reasonably good...problem with that is... it doesnt seem to do normal maps properly :/ i use js normal mapper ... for some reason with the dt3d skin shader when i try to do the normal map on it ... instead of replacing the normals ... it seems to Overlay softly... so i still get the shading of the model being low res... but with some subtle differences like forhead wrinkles and around the eyes

so my question again is does anyone know of another skin shader or plugin that looks good and works for render passes?

i made that with it... but that was a long time ago... and i dont remember what i used :/

so my question again is does anyone know of another skin shader or plugin that looks good and works for render passes?....

I found this tutorial on deathfall:

(I didn't test it yet, but it can help you)

that tutorial is kinda difficult to understand... it doesnt show me what connects to what in the shader net work ... as in how?
